A.Buel Trowbridge, Professor At American University, Is Dead

A. Buel Trowbridge, professor emeritus at American University who was the author of several books, died here yesterday at Georgetown University Hospital after a stroke. He was 82 years old.

In World War II, he served in North America and Italy with the American Red Cross. After the war, he moved to Paris where he was director of the office of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In 1948, he served as a resident officer for the State Department in Heidenheim, Germany. Mr. Trowbridge and his wife headed the UNESCO Fundamental Education Mission in Iraq from 1952 to 1955, after which they moved to Washington.

In 1955, Mr. Trowbridge joined the faculty of American University where he was a professor of Russian history. He became a professor emeritus upon his retirement in 1972.

He leaves his wife, the former Louise Thorne of McLean, Va.; two daughters, Judy T. Cullen of Lopez, Wash. and Joya Bovingdon Cox of Washington, D.C.; and a son. Alexander B. Trowbridge 3d of Wash.
