Audio Test
You will perform the audio test when you first install PalTalk Build 553 and periodically after that to improve how well you hear and how others hear you. If you can't hear users on the mic reboot PalTalk and run an audio test.
To test your audio leave the group you are in and then go to your PalList (main window) > Help > Audio Test > follow the commands the wizard will give you.
If you stay in a group while the audio test is running the room will hear it so always exit first.
V7.0 When you do a clean install the audio test will no longer come up automatically. Remember to do an audio test if you have problems hearing and others have problems hearing you.
To test your audio for PalTalk leave the group > PalList (main screen) > click "setup" (at the top) > Preferences > select the "audiotest" tab > Click "microphonetest" > do steps 1 to 4.
Mic Setup
To set up your mic double-click on the little yellow speaker on the right side of the task bar (by the clock) > Options > Properties > "Recording" button > OK.
In the next screen check the microphone > check "Select" at the bottom of the slider > set the mic to halfway up. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner to return to the main screen.
Setting Up Your Internal Sound Controls PalTalk Music Help PageVoice Chat
In a group, when you see a microphone icon besides a nickname it indicates that they are talking and you should be able hear them if you haven't muted the group. If you would like to use the mic press once on the "Req Talk" icon to raise your hand. To talk on the mic click once on the little microphone icon on the bottom left corner of the chatroom window. Click the icon once again to release the mic.
V7.0 To use the mic hands-free go to the "Actions" menu (at the top of the group) > click "Lock Microphone".
Playing Music Hands Free On PalTalk
You may prefer to key up by pressing the "Ctrl" key down (on your keyboard) and release it when you are done speaking to listen.
Watch the red line (bottom left) and keep it between 50% and 60% maximum. Keep the mic under your chin so you are not talking directly into the microphone. Exhaling directly into the mic, commonly known as "breath blast", sounds horrible to everyone listening and distorts your words so please try to avoid it.
V7.0 If you are in multiple groups at once only the active room (the room on top) will have sound and the rest are automatically muted. To toggle the sound on in another room click on it in your task bar.
Hot Mic
When you have a hot mic it means your mic is live, stuck on and it's inadvertently keyed up. Hot mic is actually a related term that involves attenuation.
Mute Sound
If you don't want to listen to a group there is no reason to stay out "in the hall" all by your lonesome. To turn off the sound from any voice activated group go to the "Switches" menu (at the top of the group) > click on "Mute Sound Coming In" to check it.
Play Music
Most music groups do not allow rap, hard rock and heavy metal unless the room is specifically for those genres. If you are unsure what type of music to play ask the admin.
Winamp is superior to Windows Media Player when it comes to playing music on PalTalk. Download Winamp for free here:
http://www.winamp.com/
To play a tune cue up your song in Winamp > press "req talk" to raise your hand (get into the rotation) > when it's your turn key up your mic and press play in Winamp > release mic when you are done.

Karaoke/Singing
The majority of the rooms in the "Music" category allow singing in them. Ask the admin first to find out for sure. If you would like to sing press once on the "Req Talk" icon to raise your hand and get into the rotation (waiting list).
Fix Sound
You may have a loud noise in the background when all that is around you is just the CPU. If you have a fan running in the background shut it off or at least try to move it away from the mic. To keep your audio output in optimum condition close off all programs you don't need running and clean out your temp files (see Drive Cleaners) regularily.
If you are breaking up or scratchy click setup (on your PalList) > "Sound Ctrls" tab > check these boxes... 1) Reduced Sampling Rate (if scratchy) 3) Larger Packet Size (if garbled) 5) Half-Duplex (if your sound cuts out) > OK > restart PalTalk > return to the room for a sound check.
To set up sound correctly first leave the group you are in > PalList (main PalTalk window) > setup > click the "Sound Ctrls" tab > put checkmarks in boxes 1, 3, 4, 5 & 7 (6 will automatically be checked) > OK > restart PalTalk > do the audio test to see if you can hear and be heard.
