Casteless

In the days of the First Age, each Lunar would be placed into his proper caste, ready to take up his destiny as one of the Silver Lady’s chosen warriors. But with the treachery of the Dragon-Blooded, everything changed. Those Lunar Exalted who did not die at the sides of their Solar mates fled into the Wyld, where their immortal essences were twisted and warped by raw chaos. Many died at the hands of the Fair Folk and other monstrosities. Those who survived learned how to resist the influences of the Wyld and once again gain control of their essences. However, the damage had already been done; the old castes were lost and the essences of Luna’s champions were no longer able to resume their original templates. Although Luna Exalts each of her Chosen, a newborn Lunar Exalted does not reach his full potential until he has been initiated into the Silver Pact. The ritual scars and tattoos bestowed upon a Child of the Moon focuses the mercurial nature of his Lunar essence and makes it possible for him to fulfill his destiny.

If a newly Exalted Lunar is not found by the Silver Pact, he cannot undergo the trials to determine with which caste his destiny lies. Because of this, a Casteless Lunar is lost within the world. The chaotic nature of his Exalted essence pulls him in too many directions at once, preventing him from excelling in any one aspect of achievement. Unable to focus his essence, the prodigal child of Luna lacks much of the supernatural power wielded by those within the Silver Pact.

Casteless Lunars are typically loners. Many remain lost and hidden within the civilized corners of the Threshold or even the Realm. They make their way through life any way they can. Some become mercenaries or bandits. Other find employment within the Guild. A few may even have found a home among the Cult of the Illuminated. The lucky ones are eventually found by the Society of the Moon and finally given their rite of passage. For these former Casteless, the feeling of finally understanding their place in the world after years or even decades of being lost and alone is indescribable. Many of these foundlings devote their lives to finding and helping other Forsaken.
