27th APRIL 2003
ESSEX v SURREY
At CHELMSFORD

The game saw Ronnie Irani hit his 17th National League half century for the county and score his 3,000th run. The match also saw a debut for Scott Brant, the county`s second overseas player.

5th MAY 2003
YORKSHIRE v ESSEX
At HEADINGLEY

A debut was given to Adrian McCoubrey as the team travelled up to Leeds. A remarkable match saw Scott Brant and Graham Napier both take four wickets as the side recorded its best ever run margin victory whilst Yorkshire their lowest ever score in the competition.

10th MAY 2003
ESSEX v KENT
At CHELMSFORD

The first meeting for four years saw James Middlebrook make his top Essex score to date of 32 not out.

18th MAY 2003
WARWICKSHIRE v ESSEX
At EDGBASTON

This was the county`s fourth consecutive victory on the ground as Will Jefferson continued his consistent National League form with his second fifty. The game also marked the first appearances of the season for Andy Clarke and Justin Bishop.

8th JUNE 2003
SURREY v ESSEX
At THE OVAL

Surrey went to their fourth consecutive win against us as Azhar Mahmood recorded the best ever bowling figures by a Surrey player against Essex.

15th JUNE 2003
ESSEX v WARWICKSHIRE
At CHELMSFORD

James Middlebrook recorded his 100th run for Essex in a match remember for Ian Bell`s 125 and the 14 sixes and 45 fours scored.

13th JULY 2003
GLAMORGAN v ESSEX
At CARDIFF

In a very high scoring game Nasser Hussain recorded his highest score in the competition in making 144 not out, whilst he was accompanied in a record second wicket stand of 148 runs with Ronnie Irani. The match marked the debut of Nick Denning but this was all to no avail as the home side raced to an easy win.

17th JULY 2003
ESSEX v GLOUCESTERSHIRE
At CHELMSFORD

The first Day Night match under the lights in the National League saw the side slump to their fourth consecutive defeat. The game saw a century for visiting captain Craig Spearman, with near misses for Nasser Hussain 98 and Ian Harvey 96. The only maidens of the match came from Graham Napier and debutant Tony Palladino. Several records fell in contests between the two sides at Chelmsford. Both recorded their highest scores, Nasser Hussain the highest individual and Andy Clarke and Ian Harvey, the worst ever bowling. There was nearly another as Craig Spearman`s knock of 101 was pipped by one of 101 not out.

27th JULY 2003
ESSEX v LEICESTERSHIRE
At SOUTHEND

The match saw the return to form of Will Jeferson who hit his fifth National League fifty, having also scored two centuries. Also starring was opponents spinner, Jeremy Snape who put in a tight spell taking 3 for 14 off his nine overs. The match finished with three of the last four Foxes batters being run out, with the other stumped, this all came after Graham Napier took his 50th National League wicket.

3rd AUGUST 2003
KENT v ESSEX
At CANTERBURY

This was the second tie between the sides with the other all square encounter being at Folkestone in 1991. The match saw Andy Flower`s first ever National League century, with Will Jefferson recording his fourth half century in the season.

5th AUGUST 2003
ESSEX v GLAMORGAN
At CHELMSFORD

Nasser Hussain recorded his third National League century and highest ever score in the competition, and also recorded his 4,000th run in the league in his 150th match. The team also brought up their highest ever tally at Chelmsford.

10th AUGUST 2003
LEICESTERSHIRE v ESSEX
At LEICESTER

Despite Andy Flower`s second century in consecutive Sundays, two rain interuptions meant the home side had the easy job of needing 89 runs off only 16 overs, under the Duckworth Lewis method.

28th AUGUST 2003
ESSEX v WORCESTERSHIRE
At COLCHESTER

The Duckworth Lewis method came into play at a wet floodlit Colchester Castle Park.

7th SEPTEMBER 2003
GLOUCESTERSHIRE v ESSEX
At BRISTOL

A rare setback on Gloucestershire territory saw the first defeat there since 1982 after nine consecutive victories.

10th SEPTEMBER 2003
ESSEX v YORKSHIRE
At CHELMSFORD

The match saw Essex safeguard their Division One position, whilst defeat saw Yorkshire relegated.

21st SEPTEMBER 2003
WORCESTERSHIRE v ESSEX
At WORCESTER

Essex clinched third place in Division One after their four wicket win with Will Jefferson`s innings including his 1,000th run in the competition.
