In one of the greatest batting ever batting displays, Essex just failed to beat the league best total record at that time. In a dazzling exhibition of stroke play Graham Gooch (3x6`s and 9x4`s) scored 116 and with him Ken McEwan (7x6`s and 15x4`s) an unbeaten 162 then added a record breaking 273 for the second wicket. In one period the pair added 185 runs in 15.4 overs in only 58 minutes, which included many boundaries (10x6`s and 16x4`s). Two of the sufferers, apart from the home crowd, were the bowlers Peter Such and Nigel Illingworth who both conceded over 60 runs in 7 overs. To their credit, albeit latterly faced by some friendly bowling, Derek Randall hit 107 in a bold reply after some early struggles. Alan Lilley took a wicket and the single over by Keith Fletcher cost him 26 runs. Towards the end, the game then became meaningless as Derek Randall added 91 runs for the sixth wicket with Eddie Hemmings who made 34. In fact all the Essex players had a bowl except keeper David East and Ken McEwan.
