On January 2nd 1997, the Territorial Collectivity of Mayotte renews a tradition forgotten since 1912 by emiting its own stamps again. ...
.
History of the Mahorese postal service:
.
French since 1841, Mayotte used the stamps of the colonies' general emissions from 1859 to 1892. It was then allowed to use its own stamps, to the "Groupe Allgorique" type, from 1892 to 1912 (total 31 stamps). Attached to Madagascar in 1912 with the three other islands of the Comoros archipelago, it then used madagascan colonial stamps. From 1950 to 1975, the archipelago became a TOM (Territoire d'Outre-Mer, French overseas territory) and benefited from particular emissions. Since the independence of the three Comorian islands, on July 6th 1975, Mayotte (which remained French) has had the status of Territorial Collectivity and used the stamps of the general regime.
