British Virgin Islands
Dependent territory of the U.K.
Tortola was coloized by British planters in 1666. Constitutional government was introduced in 1774. It became part of the Leeward Islands in 1872 and a separate Crown Colony in 1956. Postage stamps have been issued since 1866
