Bukina Faso

The area was a Mossi empire in the 18th through the 19th centuries. Upper Volta was created by the French in 1919 and abolished in 1932 with most of the territory attached to the Ivory Coast. The original borders were reestablished in 1947 with autonomy within the French community in 1958 and independence in 1960. The country was renamed Burkina Faso on August 4, 1984. Stamps were first issued for Upper Volta in 1920 and Burkina Faso in 1984.
