The area was subjugated by the French in 1894 becoming the French protectorate of Dahomey in 1904 by incorporating the French colony of Benin with Dahomey. The country became independent in 1960 with its name changed from Dahomey to the People's Republic of Benin on 30 November 1975. Postage stamps have been issued since 1892.
