Angola became a Portuguese colony after exploration in 1483. The slave traffic flourished causing friction and war in the early 17th century. Ten thousand slaves were exported annually from Luanda. The boundaries were formally established during the Berlin West Africa Congress (1884-85). Angola became a overseas province of Portugal in 1951. The Portuguese withdrew and the People's Republic of Portugal achieved full independence. The country adopted the name, Republic of Angola and the first multi-party legislative elections were held in September 1992. Postage stamps have been issued since 1870.
