AJ's Encyclopedia of Stamps & Philatelic Links

Aghanistan was formed in 1747 under Ahmed Shah Durrani. Britain tried and failed to gain control during a series of Afghan Wars through 1919. Independence was declared in 1919 after World War I. Postage stamps have been issued since 1871, which was the local year 1288. The government changed from a monarchy to a republic in July of 1973.
