How many countries are linked on the World Wide Web?

Did your computer really connect itself all the way to that server in Mongolia?

The answer is probably yes!   However, if you are using a proxy server at your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or if you are using a browser (eg Lynx) hosted at your ISP's site, there would not have been a continuous internet protocol (IP) connection from your machine all along the route.  Otherwise, yes there really was a connection made from your computer to those remote places!  It will be seen, however, that in some other cases servers are not physically located where they might seem to be.

This page seeks every country to which a direct connection can be made.

What's the definition of a 'country'?

In the list which follows,

Nations comprise

• UN members
• Sovereign entities which are not members of UN, eg Switzerland

Territories comprise

• Overseas departments, dependent territories, etc.
• Remote territories, eg Hawaii, remote from rest of USA
• Non-contiguous territories, eg Alaska, non-contiguous with rest of USA
• Miscellaneous entities, eg Antartica

Note that territories are listed as subsidiary to their parent nations.

Here are some tips if you intend following more than just a few of the hundreds of links on this page:

Use your disk file to check links to countries you are seeking since this will give you the benefit of the much faster loading of this page which will be available from your disk.  Check back weekly at this site for countries newly on WWW and for updated links, and re-SAVE the page to your disk.

• You will link to nations and territories about which you will seldom have heard, so use the opportunity to learn more about each. Take your time, find locations in an atlas, and make use of the CIA World Factbook links.

  Use your browser's Edit / Find... [Ctrl-F] feature to navigate to territories.

• Remember that your browser history of visited sites will expire, or a link might become unavailable, so keep a note of countries to which successful connections have been made. Count only those countries where you feel confident a server is actually located; otherwise, you might just as well work your way through the CIA list and then try to say you have connected to every country!
