JOINING THE BAND
We are a non-audition band. We are happy to welcome musicians of average
levels of skill.
We specially invite SOAS students, SOAS staff members and SOAS alumni to
join the Band. But the band is also open to musicians from other academic
institutions and from the community at large.
You don’t need to know how to read music to learn our tunes.
We are happy to incorporate non-traditional instruments into the band, but
our core instruments are fiddles, guitars, flutes, whistles, accordeons,
concertinas and bodhran percussion
We normally rehearse at SOAS every Thursday evening during term time, from
7.00pm.
We have a Tunebook, which is available on this website. We are open to
having additions of new tunes in the Band, but we expect people to learn the
core repertoire of about 15 tune sets, in order to be able to operate
effectively as a band.
We play commercial gigs, political gigs, and charity goods. Depending on
the nature of the gig, our callers may or may not receive payment towards
expenses.
Sometimes we also sing.
