Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon (2003) Reviewed on 11/12/04

Good

Nation: Norway

Album Genre: Melodic Black Metal/Symphonic Metal

Pros: With a little bit of tweaking in the molding the extreme sounds with the melodic sounds, this album could have been great. As it stands, this is two albums...one that is symphonic, and one that is melodic black metal. At times, everything molds well, but in the majority of the songs, both seems to just be floating--disconnected from one another. There are some great tracks on this album that really keep this album at the good status, which is "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" with the absolutely stunning clean vocals section in the middle of the song which just completely knocked me flat the first time I heard it. Some other stand out tracks include "Vredesbyrd", "Allehelgens Død I Helveds Rike", and "Eradication Instincts Defined."

Cons: It's honestly....just kinda boring. There are a few songs that really get the symphonic stuff with the extreme stuff mixed well (i.e. "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse"), but for the most part, the songs are quite repetitive with this really drawn out dramatic sound for background noise that just kinda cancels out any greatness the songs may have with just the extreme stuff.
