| Victoria bridge is a major engineering achievement of the end of the nineteenth century and was completed in 1859. Montreal had then a direct rail link to the United States and to Eastern Canada. The original bridge was a closed bridge (a tube), but fumes generated by steam locomotives created a problem for passengers.
