Kathy Mar

  • Kathy Mar's CD, These Are a Few of ...... My Favorite Sings!

This is the promotional poster for the album. The middle two-thirds of it is the album cover.

  • What can I say about Kathy Mar? Well, she's been around mainstream filking since the early 1980's. As I've heard it, she was originally a street singer in the Denver area. I've heard her voice and style compared to that of Buffy St. Marie. At times, her music reminds me of the sort of stuff Joan Baez sings - songs of conscience, anti-war stuff, and the like. Several of her songs ("Songbird," "The Wild Geese," "Calm Down," etc.) have become standards within the filk community, a testament to her capabilities and her work.

What I have found on her albums is that while everything is good, there'll be one or two songs which will stand out from the rest.
    Her previous releases include:

  • Songbird
  • The Wild Geese
  • Bamboo Wind
  • Plus Ca Change (sorry, no French symbols on this thing)
  • Plus C'est La Meme Chose
  • Made by Magic
  • her latest, . . . My Favorite Sings
  • She also has the bardic gift, wherein she can make you feel the song. There was the time she told the story of "Lucky Charm" and then sang it. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

    Here's the play list:

    1. Flowering Green
    2. The 20th Century is Almost Over
    3. Santa Monica Pier
    4. Everybody's Moon
    5. Merlin
    6. Shapeshifter
    7. No Such Thing
    8. New Life
    9. Rise Up
    10. Song of the Ripper
    11. Dirty Movie
    12. Daughters and Sons
    13. Child's Song
    14. Water, Fire and Smoke
    15. The Word of G-D
    16. A Healing in this Night

I started listening to the CD, and then I hit track 5 - "Merlin." It hit me, hard, so I listened to it again. And again. And still again, about a dozen times. It's that haunting. It makes you wonder where Merlin is hiding and when he's going to suddenly appear.

    The CD costs $14.00.
