Reply from Jan Jarratt MP (Labour Party) - Whitsunday to Kim Bax (Mum), received on the 23rd February 2004:-

Dear Mrs Bax

Thank you for your concern and your correspondence regarding the issue of seat belts on school buses. As this is a matter of government policy it is most appropriately dealt with through the responsible Minister
(Hon Paul Lucas).

As a member of the Beattie Government I am committed to ensuring the safety of all children including those travelling to school on buses and
I support the process being undertaken which has trialled the use of seat belts on school buses. As you are aware, the taskforce is due to provide recommendations to government by April 2004.

Yours sincerely

Jan Jarratt MP
Member for Whitsunday

Response to Jan Jarratt MP, from Kim Bax (Mum) - sent on the 23rd February 2004:-

Dear Jan,

The people of Whitsunday voted for you with an expectation you would represent their interests - which is why I addressed my questions to you.  Of course Paul Lucas has a major responsibility in the area of school bus safety - but as elected represented so do YOU.

Your response neither addresses, acknowledges or answers my questions of 22nd January 2004.  So, here they are again:-

  • Have you read the full text of Professor Joubert's letter (available at www.geocities.com/seatbelts2004 )  ?  Professor Joubert is the author of all the current Australian Design Rules (in relation to interstate coaches), he's been awarded the Order of Australia in relation to his services to engineering and he headed the committees in the wake of the Kempsey/Grafton bus crash horror (1989 - 52 dead, many more horribly injured).

  • Do you unequivocally support the FULL implementation of the recommendations of the Queensland "Task Force" within the life of the next Parliament (2004/2007)?

  • In what practical ways do you (or have already), intend to support/advocate for the full implementation of "Task Force" recommendations? (e.g., for instance, speaking in parliament, writing letters, serving on committees etc.)

I'm sure your voters are as keenly interested in a direct answer as I am.  As a practical suggestion, you'll note there are three questions.  Perhaps if you (in your next response), numbered your answers "1, 2 & 3" respectively, it would avoid any confusion.

Regards - Kim Bax
