Reply from Kev Lingard MP (National Party ), Beaudesert - , to Kim Bax (Mum), received on the 2nd February 2004:-

Kim,

Many thanks for your recent E Mail.

Congratulations on the success of your campaign to date.

I believe the next important step is to ensure that no students are allowed to stand on buses  which are travelling faster than 80 kph.

All the best,

Kim

 Thanks for your Email

  • I agree with your terminology of “banning standing students in 90km/hr and 100km/hr speed zones”.
  • I have read Professor Joubert’s letter.
  • I do support the full implementation of the recommendations of the Queensland “Task Force” during the life of the next Parliament.
  • I am prepared to speak in Parliament regarding this report.

 Regards

Response to Kev Lingard MP (National Party), Beaudesert, from Kim Bax (Mum) - sent on the 3rd February 2004 (Kev Lingard is also Kim Bax's local State representative) :-

Goodmorning Kev,

Thankyou for your response to me of 2nd February 2004 - and your warm wishes.

I also very much agree with you in regard to banning standing students on school buses that are travelling faster than 80 klm/hr as a good first step - though banning standing students in 90 klm/hr & 100 klm/hr speed ZONES would be more specific, and more sensible.  Is that what you meant?

Now, to get back to my original email of 22nd January 2004.  It did contain some very specific questions, which you don't seem to have addressed.  For your convenience (and as a reminder), I'll reproduce them:-

  • Have you read the full text of Professor Joubert's letter (available at www.geocities.com/seatbelts2004 )  ?  Professor Joubert is the author of all the current Australian Design Rules (in relation to interstate coaches), he's been awarded the Order of Australia in relation to his services to engineering and he headed the committees in the wake of the Kempsey/Grafton bus crash horror (1989 - 52 dead, many more horribly injured).

  • Do you unequivocally support the FULL implementation of the recommendations of the Queensland "Task Force" within the life of the next Parliament (2004/2007)?

  • In what practical ways do you (or have already), intend to support/advocate for the full implementation of "Task Force" recommendations? (e.g., for instance, speaking in parliament, writing letters, serving on committees etc.)

Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

All the best - Kim

On the 5th February 2004, Kim Bax received a further email from Kev, clarifying his position.  It can be seen on the far left hand side of this page - hi-lited in green.

Kim wrote to Kev Lingard again on the 5th February 2004, here's what she said:-

Congratulations Kev !!!  You've given a firm guarantee to support the full implementation of the recommendations of the 2001 "Queensland School Transport Safety Task Force" to instal seatbelts on school buses, plus a clear statement of what you will do in support of this aim - and an ackowledgement that you have read Professor Joubert's chilling predictions.  I'm extremely pleased.

All the best - Kim
