Our Camp derives its name in honor of William T. Martin. He was born in Kentucky, March 25, 1823. He grew up in Vicksburg and eventually settled in Natchez in his early twenties. He was elected district attorney at the age of 22.
He was commissioned a captain at the beginning of the War for Southern Independence and formed a cavalry troop known as the Adams Troop. They were mustered into service June 16, 1861. He commanded the Second Battalion of Mississippi cavalry and later commanded the Jeff Davis Legion under the command of J.E.B. Stuart and he rode with Stuart in the famous raid around McClellan's army before Richmond. He received commendations for his gallantry. He was promoted to Major General in November 1863.
After the war he returned to Natchez where he resumed his legal career and became a successful businessman. He served in the State Senate for 12 years. While in the Senate he helped design the state flag that is still in use. His house (Montaigne) still stands in the city on Liberty Road. He died March 16, 1910 and is buried in the Natchez City Cemetery.
