THIS GIRL + WHIZZWOOD. AT HULL ADELPHI. 25/ 09/ 02.
This Girl have played at the Adelphi in Hull a couple of times before but for one reason or another we were unable to see them. I kind of figured that the gig last night would be our last chance to see them in such a small venue so we had to be there no matter what. The band originally formed under the name GERL back in November 1999. The only place they used to play was in and around their hometown of Rotherham in Yorkshire but then they were offered a nationwide support slot with label mates Monkey Boy. The rest is history. Since then they have supported Earthtone 9, Medula Nocte and more recently Pitchshifter. Theyve played the Carling Weekend, have had their own headline tours, released an album and formed quite a big following. There were quite a large number of people in the crowd last night singing along to nearly every song. They must have the album. I on the other hand hadnt heard anything by them at all. However I know people that have seen them before so I knew what to expect. A melodic energetic 4 piece hardcore Emo type band. Lead singer Liam would not keep still, making taking photos of him nearly impossible. He is certainly one of the most energetic front men Ive seen in a long time. The rest of the band, drummer Ryan, bassist Matt and guitarist Chris were also equally as energetic. The band clearly like to put some effort in to their live performances. They must tire easily though. They played for just 30 minutes. There seems to be quite alot of hype surrounding This Girl. Guess some of it is justified but its not like they do anything different or new. Its nothing we havent seen before. The only difference between This Girl and for example, current kings of Emo, Hundred Reasons, is that This Girl arent as good yet. I dare say that in time they will be though. Who knows? Support for the night came from Hulls very own Whizzwood. Ive seen them about 5 times now. I didnt like them the first time and I still dont. Most bands get better with practice. Whizzwood however seem to have got worse. In fairness, they are talented musicians, especially the drummer. Its just they choose to waste their talent on punk hardcore crap. Most of their songs sound exactly the same. Theres very little variety. The only thing that kept the attention of the audience was their in between song banter. It was actually quite funny. They arent going to make it in the music industry. Maybe they will make it as comedians. Or maybe as vicars. Their bassist was dressed as one tonight. Maybe he is considering a career change. Im really hoping so. Whizzwood really suck.
