| AN INTERVIEW WITH,,, GEMMA FROM THE SUFFRAJETS. WHO IS IN THE SUFFRAJETS AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? gemma(drums) alex (vox/guitar) shelly(vox/ guitar) sam (vox/bass) HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER? me (gemma)and alex were at school together, and messed around with guitars and stuff, had an oppotunity to go to a rehearsal studio aged about 14, and messed around some more, over months, it became serious, not messing around anymore!! years later, and several bass players on, we met shelly and sam (sisters) who were the final parts of the jigsaw. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? such a difficult question !! but a good mix of punk, grunge, and good old fashioned rock and roll!!! WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? nirvana, papa roach, mettalica,redhotchillis, travis barker, the clash foo fighters and some of the older stuff, such as led zepplin, and jimi hendrix, and the list goes on and on and on..... WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO CALL YOURSELVES THE SUFFRAJETS? we were looking for a name that sort of made you aware that we are females, but not so "in yer face" as some female bands that are out there, we felt that it did the job. we are females, but not the womens libbers, men hateing type.!! SAM AND SHELLY ARE SISTERS. IS THERE ANY OF ARGUMENTS BETWEEN THE PAIR? alex and I have lived as sisters for years also, it works really well between the four of us, yeah course there are rows, but cos we are all so close, we can have a damn good row, and fifteen miuntes later, its all over!! YOU�VE GOT A NEW SINGLE COMING OUT. IT�S CALLED �DISTINCTION�. TELL US ABOUT IT. this song was written last year, just before our tour bus accident and it surprised us, cos its a bit darker, than some of our other stuff .we had a bit of a job choosing a single, because, our stuff is all so varied, we dont want people to catagorise us after listening to one song. we say, you have to see us live, and listen to a whole set. YOU�VE JUST COMPLETED YOUR DEBUT ALBUM. WHAT WILL IT BE CALLED AND WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED? a title has not yet been confirmed, but, possibly "ceasarean" it will be released later on in the year. HOW MANY TRACKS ARE ON IT? WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITES? around 14 at the moment, but we will slice that down a bit we think, and release time, will be around the end of the year. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT IT�S RELEASE? ab.so.utly!!!! AS A BAND, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? surrving our tour bus accident, and coming back stronger, after people assumed that would be the end of us. broken bones, internal injuries, and losing our bass player (she could not get back into it ) and besides that, playing at Whisky agogo in L.A. YOU�VE PLAYED WITH A LOT OF BANDS. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? we have made so many friends on the road, we just could not say who we most enjoyed playing with the most. every one of them has been so special in their own ways, IF YOU COULD PLAY WITH ANY OTHER BAND IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? we think, probably The Foo Fighters, they cover all angles!!!! YOU�VE BEEN ASKED TO PLAY AS PART OF THE LADYFEST TOUR. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? we have played with Kat Wife a couple of times, and she is involved with the tour. we did some of the ladyfest tour last year, with Kat Wife, and really enjoyed it and from that, we were asked again this year. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? we all get nervous at different times and a different gigs, not usually all at the same time time and the same gig..thank god!!!! HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT GETTING YOUR FIRST GIG? DO YOU REMEMBER IT WELL? HOW DID IT GO? oh god yes, me and alex played at a pub called the cock tavern in edmonton london. as it happens, the gig went very well, well, in our opinions it did !!!! WILL YOU BE PLAYING THIS SUMMERS FESTIVALS? we have nothing in concrete yet, mainly because we have only just fifnished recording, but we have heard some rumours, but we'll see!!!! WHICH OF YOUR LYRICS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? "you tried to bring us down, but we will not fold" from the song "Car crash mayonaise" which was written after our tour bus accident, and those lyrics cover lots of people, and incidents, that happened after the crash. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN/FORM A BAND? me and alex fell into being in a band, we started crashing around in a rehearsal studio, and after a while, we relised that our crashing and banging was turning into something else. also., no one else had at school, and we wanted to be "cool" WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? just go for it. 100%.
