| AN INTERVIEW WITH� ANDY FROM THE NAKED APES. WHO IS IN THE NAKED APES AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Mikey is song writing guitarist and lead vocalist, Andy is bass player and backing vocalist and Rusty plays drums/sings backing vocals. HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM THE NAKED APES TOGETHER? Mikey and Andy had met whilst working on other music and Russ answered an ad in the Loot, TWICE! First losing out to a female drummer (fair enough) and second time to a fantastic session drummer. After only 24 hrs the decision was reversed and Rusty became an ape (he was a bit insecure for the first few weeks though, haha). HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Punky pop rock with loads of catchy melodies and riffs and nearly all the songs are rude ! WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Yeah we recently saw Bowling For Soup and infact met big Chris just before the show. We have have one guitar less but it's sort of similar and the lyrics are funny. Blood Hound Gang for their outrageousness. Andy and Russ are secret metallers but only in rehearsals when Mike's in the toilet! Blink, Green Day, etc YOU HAVE JUST RELEASED YOUR DEBUT SINGLE. TELL US ABOUT IT. Produced by Mark Wallis, with the b side and EVERYTHING else done at Mikeys house, art work, posters, fliers, all the photos. We've always prided ourselves in being able to do things in house, quite literally, with the video, shot in a student house in Reading. We got massive support from Reading 107 and even a few plays on Radio1 (Mike Davis) and Capital Fm (Jane Gazzo), which was all really cool. ARE FANS STILL ABLE TO BUY IT? You can still order it (if now sold out) at any Virgin or Hmv, �1.99. HAVE YOU STARTED WORK ON YOUR ALBUM YET? ooh, good question. Mikeys away right now putting the finishing touches on a couple of songs, then we'll tour the set (universities, nationwide in sept/oct) ready for recording the album and next single in nov/dec. It always sounds better if the bands been out playing the material live, than doing it the other way round. YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH BANDS INCLUDING SPUNGE AND REEF. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? Both the Spunge and Reef gigs were huge audiences which is always a blast. We also did a few gigs with Wheatus and they were all cool guys, very complimentary about our singing as well, so that was good. Pretty much all the other bands we met on the last tour were really cool. Everyone's in the same boat (as us) no money, looking for a break and all that, but as our drummer likes to say, '..life is the journey.'I think that's bollocks personally : ) DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Not often, the bigger the audience the better. We're Bill and Ted and Beavis and Butt Head rolled into one up there. duuuuun duuuun duuuurn! HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? ey ? your joking. No, i am. Dont open with a closer and dont close with an opener (Tony Bennet!) . apart from that we just vary the order/set according to who's out there. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? Wasted is the single so that's good to do and probably Bumping Into Stuff cos we just go crazy at the end. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? guitar in case, grab a beer, wait till the sweating stops then talk to girls : ) YOU HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO BLINK 182 AND BOWLING FOR SOUP. DO YOU AGREE WITH THOSE COMPARISONS? as above, we appreciate them but the ethic behind the apes is primarily 'have fun' WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? The answer would vary from each of us but it'll be roughly along the lines of selling lots of albums, having a hit in the U.S., playing some massive festivals, and just being able to say we did something really cool. IF YOU COULD INTERVIEW YOURSELVES, WHAT QUESTIONS WOULD YOU ASK? Why are you putting yourselves through all this you fools? ha ha. DO YOU EVER READ ANY OF THE MESSAGES YOUR FANS LEAVE ON YOUR FORUM? we read every single one, laughing our heads off mostly. There's so many people saying how much they love the band that we leave the silly hate mail up there for everyones amusement. I cant believe we offend anyone, but there you go. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DARKNESS? Wicked, totally rocking and tongue in cheek ( i reckon ayway). WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING ALBUM YOU OWN? If they're crap they go straight out to the charity shop, but there might be some rubbish compilations still nestling at the back . WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY? Not much. A couple of talented people crop up (Lemar sings beautifully) but so many shit ones get through you wonder if it's not all fixed somehow WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND FORM A BAND? Watching some old footage of Pete Townshend smashing one up. ok yeah, and to try and get girls, ha ha. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? write lots of songs, keep gigging and constanlty re-evaluate what you're doing.
