| AN INTERVIEW WITH... The loveGods. SO WHO IS IN The loveGods AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Deah: Vocals/Guitar Art: Guitar/Backing Vocals Rob: Drums /Backing Vocals Mezza: Bass/ Backing Vocals HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER? Art and Deah met while Deah was busking outside a cafe in Paris, lived in a room in the city for a year and then moved to the UK. They tried out about thirty drummers and as many bassists (took 4 years) until they found Rob about 2 years ago and Mezza just over a month ago! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Minimalistic. We've made a conscious effort to keep effects out so that we can see if the songs hold up on their own. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Deah: Loads of them from Pink Floyd, Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to Led Zepellin, Nirvana and the Beatles Art: Velvet Underground (Lou Reed), Serge Gainsberg, U2, Canned Heat WHERE DID THE NAME The loveGods COME FROM? It came from Deah like everything else....! YOU RECENTLY WON THE TITLE OF RADIO ONE BEST UNSIGNED BAND 2004. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GOING INTO THE RADIO ONE STUDIOS AND PERFORMING LIVE ON AIR? Deah: We've done some radio sessions before on BBC Radio London but it was still pretty cool. Really enjoyed the experience. Art: It was stressful, then very exciting, then stressful and tehn REALLY exciting! IS THE RADIO ONE LIVE LOUNGE REALLY AS SMALL AND AS POORLY DECORATED AS JO WHILEY LEADS US TO BELIEVE?! Yes! HAVE YOU HAD ANY RECORD COMPANY INTEREST SINCE ALL THE RADIO ONE STUFF? What's a record company?! YOU HAVE SUPPORTED ASH, THE DARKNESS AND NICK CAVE IN THE PAST. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? The Criminals, you strike up a relationship when you tour with a band and they were great. With the one off supports you often don't even meet the headline. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Very! Stupidly! HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? We plan before and it usually starts with hard rock early on and then we throw in styles of music that people don't expect from us, it breaks up the seriousness of it all. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? Deah: it depends on the night, you never know which one is going to take off. Art: Heroin Rob: It's different songs for different gigs. At the moment it's God In Stereo and Heroin is always a great one to play. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Deah: Depends on the gig, sometimes I dance with the crowd afterwards, sometimes come out and sign cds and talk to the fans and sometimes hide backstage. Art: Get on my fake laptop decks and DJ Rob: Have a drink! IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU? No, not if the one's that are there are listening. What's more disheartening is when you put everything into a gig and people are too drunk or talking too much to notice. I'VE HEARD YOU'RE PLAYING GLASTONBURY! BET YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT? Who thought of this question?!! If you weren't looking forward to it then you wouldn't be doing it... WHICH OF THE BANDS PLAYING GLASTONBURY ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING? Deah: Ben Harper, Muse Art: Ben Harper, The Zutons, curious to see Snow Patrol Mezza: Muse, Oasis Rob: Morrissey, 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster and Mick Jones (who happens to be playing after us on the Left Field/ Strummerville stage on Friday 25th June!) WILL YOU BE PLAYING ANY OTHER OF THE SUMMER FESTIVALS? We're playing at a huge rock festival in Sweden next Friday (The Hultsfred Festival) with Missy Elliott, we're in another unsigned competition to open for the Leveller's Beautiful Days festival in Devon on 21st/22nd August (go check out our website to find out how to vote) and we're playing the Falmouth Rock Regatta on August 7th. We're disappearing into the studio at the end of July and mid August to record our debut album so that's where we'll be when we're not gigging. ANY PLANS FOR A FULL UK TOUR LATER IN THE YEAR? Not yet, we're touring during June around the country and will be travelling down to Cornwall and Scotland for some one-off dates in August. Until we record the album we're not planning a full UK tour though. MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY, WHICH OF THE SONGS YOU'VE WRITTEN IS YOUR FAVOURITE? Today it happens to be Mississippi, tomorrow it could be another song WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS? We already have done - Overload (Sugababes), Bruce Springsteen (I'm on Fire), Velvet Underground (What Goes On) and Bridgit Bardot (La Vie) WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW AS A CHILD? Deah: We had just arrived in France at dusk and I said I loved that time, it looks beautiful. Art's mum said it's called "Entre chiens et loups" which translated means "Between Dogs and Wolves". I thought it was a beautiful and apt title. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT SOME OF THE TRACKS ON THE ALBUM. Deah: It's such a broad question, I can't really answer. I don't want to give pre-conceptions of the songs, just want people to enjoy them. SAID ALBUM EVEN FEATURES A COUPLE OF 'HIDDEN' LIVE TRACKS. WHERE AND WHEN WERE THEY RECORDED? At our first big gig in Brighton last September at Komedia (just before we went on tour with the Fun Lovin Criminals). ANY PLANS TO RELEASE A SINGLE? Yes, in mid August we're releasing a radio version of Heroin WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND?
