AN INTERVIEW WITH
PAUL FROM THE GLITTERATI.

SO WHO IS IN THE GLITTERATI AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO?
The Glitterati are Paul Gautrey - vocals/ John Emsley - lead guitar/ Nic Denson - guitar/ Billy James - DRUMS/ Jamie Snell - drums
HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER?
I (Paul) have known john since I was 4 years old and have been in bands with him and Billy in Leeds for years, we got Nic in when his old band split up, which worked out well because we were already friends and he was into the same kind of stuff as us and he just fit in straight away, we needed a bass player and Nic suggested Jamie who he'd known since school, the only problem was he lived in London and had never played bass and we all lived in Leeds, but Nic was confident Jamie was a fast learner and with him living in London it gave us a good excuse for a much needed change of scenery.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
As a Rock n roll band with great songs that have swagger and style.
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
Rolling Stones, Guns N Roses, David Bowie, Johnny Thunders
WHERE DID THE NAME THE GLITTERATI COME FROM?
It came from a review of one of our old bands, it was describing the audience as The Glitterati of the Leeds music scene, and we just wanted a strong name and not a bland inoffensive name like so many bands, we are a confident band so we wanted a confident name.
DO YOU WEAR SOCKS IN BED?
No, unless I've passed out.
HOW DID THE KING ADORA TOUR GO LATE LAST YEAR?
It went really well it was our first real tour and they were such cool guys, they really went out of there way to make us feel welcome and the crowds were great too we had a really good time every night.
OUT OF ALL THE BANDS YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH, WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY?
Well we really enjoyed the King Adora tour because every night was a party, The Wildhearts are a band I always loved and the first band I ever saw live so playing with them has been really cool, Jets crowd were really getting into us and we did some crazy shows with them, David Lee Roth was everything and more you can imagine, and The Killers are a band I love and good guys, I think we have been really lucky that we have got on well with most the bands we have played with so I cant say which has been my favourite, the ones I've mentioned have all been special for different reasons.
BET YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO TOURING WITH THE WILDHEARTS?
Yeah as I said I've always loved them, I think Ginger is an amazing songwriter, I always had a fascination with bands who had a story and with The Wildhearts that's an understatement. We are a band that love touring and the lifestyle that been on tour brings so we cant wait.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE?
Yeah I do, I don't know why, the other guys don't seem to get nervous at all but I do, it's getting a bit easier now it's strange because its the small gigs that I get more nervous but as soon as you get out there nerves disappear and you just don't give a shit anymore, we all have a massive belief in ourselves as a live band and as soon as we walk on the nerves are replaced with excitement
HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET?
Some songs just seem to work better early in the set and some later we have kind of learnt where each song feels right and what works best for us live.
WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING?
A track called 1st floor I think at the moment but it changes from tour to tour
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG?
Try and get my breath back, open a beer.
IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU?
Well at the moment we have mainly been supporting bands in big venues so the crowds are always good, when we started out we played loads of gigs to really small crowds sometimes just the bar staff, but we were just so pleased to be up there and we always believed things would get better so it didn't really bother us, you have to put on the same show no matter how many people are there.
WILL YOU BE PLAYING ANY OF THE SUMMER FESTIVALS?
We are definately playing the Download festival; Reading/Leeds looks pretty certain too.
WHAT IS THE MOST SPINAL TAP MOMENT YOU HAVE HAD ON TOUR?
I remember playing at a fish and chip shop in Scotland and we had to wait for all the old ladies to finish their tea before we could soundcheck.
WHAT BAND EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU LIKE TO RE LIVE?
When we signed the record company took us to spearmint rhino and paid for everything, that was a pretty messy night, but it would probably be when we played with jet at the forum the crowd seemed so into us that night.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR POCKETS RIGHT NOW?
Some loose change, house keys and a phone number from last night on a bands flyer.
HOW WAS THE 'DO YOU LOVE YOURSELF' SINGLE RECEIVED BY THE MUSIC PRESS?
Mostly really well, the NME loved it, Kerrang hated it but it got a reaction everywhere which is something we aim for in everything we do, it was basically a demo we put out on an independant label and it sold a lot more copies and got a lot more attention than anyone thought it would
WHAT IS IT LIKE SEEING YOURSELVES IN MAGAZINES AND HEARING YOUR SONGS ON THE RADIO ETC?
Its cool, you kind of get used to it but it shows that everything is going in the right direction and more people are getting to hear our band.
YOUR NEW SINGLE IS CALLED 'HERE COMES A CLOSE UP'. WHAT IS THE TRACK ABOUT?
Its about when we moved to London and we would go out to the clubs and meet a lot of people I don't know if it was the drugs in these places but we seemed to meet a lot of really paranoid people, luckily we have very good bullshit detectors.
TELL US THE STORY BEHIND THE VIDEO FOR THE TRACK.
We were recording the single when the record company came to us and said you can either play your instruments in a white room whilst miming the track like most bands or we could hire a model and she will be pretty much naked and so will you guys. The decision wasn't too difficult.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO RELEASE AN ALBUM ANYTIME SOON?
Yeah its our priority to make a great rock n roll record, we will start recording it in LA probably in June
WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS?
Maybe if we could do something interesting and different
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW AS A CHILD?
I was mad on Popeye cartoons when I was about 4
IS THE BAND NOW YOUR FULL TIME CAREER OR DO YOU STILL HAVE OTHER JOBS TOO?
Its been our full time career for about a year now, we signed a publishing deal first around a year ago which allowed us to be a full time band, and we signed a record deal with Atlantic just before Christmas
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND?
Staying together and seeing how far we can take things, I think we can achieve anything we want to, we believe in this band.
WHICH DO YOU ENJOY DOING THE MOST WRITING SONGS, RECORDING THEM OR PLAYING THEM LIVE?
Definately playing live every time
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT AT SCHOOL?
P.E it was mixed and I think I had a fetish for girls in sportswear at the time.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR SMARTIE?
Red
WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND?
I never wanted to pick up a guitar, I saw a video of Guns N Roses playing a really small club gig before they were really big and they were on fire, I watched it every day for about three years and I've still never seen anything as exciting, I always wanted to be a frontman, I wanted to be Axl
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND?
Go for it, have belief it wont be easy but if you can make it work its the best thing in the world.

ALL QUESTIONS BY SCREAMING TARTS.
