THE DAWN PARADE + SUPPORT. AT YORK FIBBERS. 14/ 07/ 03.
I thought we had maybe got the wrong night when we first entered the venue. We were there to see The Dawn Parade yet there was some Emo type band playing. Hmmmmmmmm. They werent exactly the type of band you would expect to see on the same bill as The Dawn Parade. The Emo type band in question were called Next Day Delivery. I wasnt very impressed but they were way better than Losing Sunday Drive who were truly terrible. They had stupid annoying high pitch voices. They sounded like they had been breathing in helium or something. All their crappy punk songs sounded the same and in between songs they kept trying and failing to be funny. They had the same childish humour as bands such as Blink 182. Most of the people at the gig seemed to be mates with the two support bands. However, when the real stars of the night, The Dawn Parade came on stage, fans of the band suddenly appeared from nowhere and joined us down the front. They opened with The Passion before following it with a track not mentioned on the set list. During this track Greg left the stage and came out into the crowd. He seemed to be much happier at this gig than last time we saw them and said a lot more between songs. It had been a good week for the band. They had a call from the legend that is John Peel earlier in the week. He wants them to record a theme tune for his radio show. Greg asked the crowd to suggest lyrics for the track. The night before this gig The Dawn Parade played at the Willow Festival. I expect they played to hundreds of people there, possibly thousands. By the end of their set tonight just 36 people were present, making a gig factor of nine apparently. So Greg said anyway. They didnt seem bothered they were playing to so few people though. Latest single Strung Out Of Nowhere wasnt performed tonight but they did sing possible next single The Craving. Well I think that is the next single anyways. The set list confused me. Wider Than The January Skies sounded as good as ever. Why it was released as a B-side and not a single I dont know. Big mistake guys. Having said that, most of the B-sides are good enough to be singles, especially tracks like The Dark Stuff which was also performed in the about 35 minutes The Dawn Parade were on stage for. The Hole In My Heart was dedicated to guy in the crowd before they concluded with Good Luck Olivia. And that was that. No doubt The Dawn Parade will be touring again later this year so if you havent seen them before make sure you do. The sooner the better.
