THE DAWN PARADE + KIF + LES FLAMES. AT SCARBOROUGH KAZBAH. 15/ 05/ 03.
On arrival I was expecting to see a reasonably busy venue. However I was wrong. I would say the venue was in fact just a tenth full. I felt really sorry for the bands having to play in front of so few people. Its a brand new venue in the town centre and still people cant be bothered to get off from their fat asses and support the local music scene. I would describe Les Flames as been a garage rock band, alittle like The Datsuns. They seemed really cool to begin with but the novelty soon wore off. Most of their tracks seemed to sound the same. By the time their eight song set drew to a close I was getting quite bored. Just before local boys Kif began playing, we went to introduce ourselves to The Dawn Parade. Despite reviewing them and emailing them etc, I dont think they had any idea who we were. Kif sounded rather like the Foo Fighters. The Foo Fighters are probably one of their influences but I could be wrong. They seem to go down well but as most of the people watching seemed to be friends with Kif, I would expect no less. After they had finished I went to the toilet, where I found Greg from The Dawn Parade warming up his vocal cords. He sang while I pissed. Nice. The band ended up playing to about 40 people altogether, including the two support bands, bar staff and us. After opening with b-side The Passion came the fantastic Hole In My Heart taken from the now sold out Electric Fence Your Gentleness EP. It was followed by new single Strung Out On Nowhere, released on July 7th. It is described by the band as being three and a half minutes of senseless violence, sex, death and disco beats. Its quite different from their other tracks and reminded me alittle of Scarlet Soho. Despite the lack of people attending the gig, the band still seemed to enjoy themselves and gave it their all. Drummer Ben seemed alittle peed off though. His drum kit bared the brunt of his anger. He managed to smash a nearby glass too when he threw away a broken drumstick. The band were full of energy and I really enjoyed watching them. I would like to see them perform in front of a bigger crowd sometime at a gig with more of an atmosphere. I couldnt help but sing to myself the catchy chorus of Wider Than The January Skies. I dont know what Im running from, I dont know what Im running for... The Cambridge four piece concluded with the amazing Good Luck Olivia. It was a short but sweet set. The Dawn Parade nearly always have gigs planned so you have no excuses not to go see them. Seeing The Dawn Parade should be made law.
