| AN INTERVIEW WITH... ADAM FROM THE BOXER REBELLION. SO FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW, WHO IS IN THE BOXER REBELLION AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Nathan Nicholson-vocals/keyboards/guitar. Todd Howe-lead guitar. Adam Harrison-Bass. Piers Hewitt-Drums WHERE DID THE NAME THE BOXER REBELLION COME FROM? Had hundreds of possible names- all shit- then found 'the boxer rebellion' in a political history book. Liked the sound of the name and also found the story behind it quite interesting. (the original boxer rebellion was a chinese uprising against the oppressive colonialists around 1900.) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? I'd describe it as epic, dark rock, but other people might call it indie or new rock maybe. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Radiohead, The Beatles, Bowie, Dylan, Niravana, Coldplay, Elbow................. YOU HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO THE COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE. ARE YOU FANS OF THEM? Yeah, we like there music- havn't got there new album yet. It's true that people compare us to them a bit but a band always has to be described as 'like' another band for people who havn't heard it. Don't think so myself though. YOU RELEASED YOUR DEBUT SINGLE, WATERMELON, RECENTLY. WHAT IS THE TRACK ABOUT? The track is about falling in love with music/touching a girls vagina for the first time. HAVE YOU STARTED WORK ON AN ALBUM? We have 3 or 4 tracks recorded for possible use on an album but have not yet started on the final body of what would make up an album- or decided on the final tracks etc. MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY, WHICH OF THE SONGS YOU'VE WRITTEN IS YOUR FAVOURITE? I think as an all rounder we enjoy In The Empire the most. We love playing it live and i am proud of the song's form and dynamic. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS? Not in any serious way- as for a live show sometime in the distant future- who knows! HOW DID YOUR RECENT SUPPORT SLOT WITH THE RAVEONETTES COME ABOUT? Through our tour agents ITB, who passed some stuff to them and got us the tour. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Not so much nervous but fidgety and ready to play, mayby slightly excited. HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? We structure it so that the audience can see a flowing performance, making sure the songs move into each other nicely. Starting songs and ending songs are very important for leaving the best possible impression on a crowd. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? Watermelon. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Get a pint of water/bottle of beer/smell my armpits. DO YOU EVER GET HOMESICK WHILE ON TOUR? Not really- its all exciting and your in a different town every night- not much time for homesickness. IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU? Not really, at the end of the day it is at the very least a free rehearsal- and alot can be taken from learning how to perform to a small crowd in exactly the same way that you would perform to a big crowd. WHICH TOWNS/VENUES DO YOU MOST ENJOY PLAYING? London is our hometown- and the place in which we have gigged the most- so now there is always a good crowd. On tour we really enjoyed Cambridge, Hull and Tunbridge Wells- sometimes the smaller places have the most up for it crowds! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DARKNESS? Shite- 'Ooooooo but its post-ironic' No it isn't, its cod rock. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME? OK Computer. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? Main slot on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury on the Saturday night. IF YOU COULD INTERVIEW YOURSELVES, WHAT QUESTIONS WOULD YOU ASK? Are any of you single? If so what do you look for in a woman and how can they get hold of you. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY? I think they are awfull (but the early auditions for pop idol make for great tv). Cannot be taken seriously. DO YOU EVER READ ANY OF THE MESSAGES YOUR FANS LEAVE ON YOUR WEBSITE? Yes, its good to see whats going on with the people who like us. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND? My Primary school Headmaster made me pick up a guitar but Nirvana's nevermind made me want to join a band. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Look for musicians who have the same standard of playing as you, the same amount of time to put in, the same tastes in music the same aspirations blah blah blah blah...........
