| AN INTERVIEW WITH�. BEN CALVERT FROM SCENES. WHO IS IN SCENES AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Benny - drums. Ant - guitar, Keith - bass/programming, Nick - guitar, Fraser - vox. WHERE DID THE NAME SCENES COME FROM? Keith liked the �contains scenes of an adult nature� thing, so it came from that. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Many, but a few are: Devin Townsend, Bill Hicks, Nirvana, Led Zepplin, Yes, Korn, Sepultura, RHCP, Zappa etc. HOW DOES THE MUSIC OF SCENES DIFFER FROM THAT OF VEX RED? Bit harder. Bit trippier. Not as radio friendly. More intresting to play. Harder to dance to. ANY IDEA WHEN SCENES WILL BE RELEASING SOMETHING? If at all - middle of 2004. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? Being happy with it and each other. Knowing that you�re being honest with yourself. YOU�VE JUST BEEN ON TOUR WITH FONY. HOW DID IT GO? Fine. They were nice guys. So were Apartment 26. I was skint the whole tour but we still got fucked!! OUT OF ALL THE BANDS YOU HAVE TOURED WITH IN THE PAST, WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED TOURING WITH AND WHY? Bigger tours like Slipknot, Staind, Bush, Soulfly etc are good because they are generally very organised, and very exciting with big crowds. A tour I did with Kill To This, alongside Earthtone 9 and Misery Loves Co around Europe was probably the most memorable. We did lots of fun things!!! DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? No. I focus on my instrument. Oooooo!!! Isn�t Ben deeeep. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Find a space for 10 mins to come down. Or begin packing down my gear. Depends on gig. DO YOU EVER GET HOMESICK WHILE ON TOUR? Every now and again I miss little comforts, but not much. I prefer to be busy(ish)!! IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU? No. It�s disheartening when your band get bothered by things like that. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU PLAYED THE DRUMS FOR? 9 years. Shit! CAN YOU PLAY ANY OTHER INSTRUMENTS? Bit of piano. Bit of guitar. Some other things when I was at school. TELL US ABOUT YOUR OTHER BAND, SACK TRICK. Sack Trick is a source of experience and fun. Only when you�ve learnt your parts can you take the piss. WHEN WILL THE KISS COVERS ALBUM BE OUT? It�s been ready a while. Sorry it took so long! Once we land a deal for it, it�ll be released. WHICH BAND DO YOU MOST ENJOY PLAYING FOR, SCENES OR SACK TRICK? Scenes I play mostly for myself. It�s my trip. Sack Trick I play for everybodys trip. We trip together. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY OFF? If I have weed, I smoke it!! If not, I just go about my day: see a friend, air drum, listen to stuff, sleep, eat food, read stuff, watch stuff, question stuff! DO YOU GO BACK TO YOUR HOME TOWN OF BEVERLEY MUCH? I�m there around 2 months per year. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN A SMALL SLEEPY MARKET TOWN? Same as most places I guess. Slightly closed minded. Alienated. Frustrating. But kinda fun! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY? Makes me ill. I�d like to see the majority aim higher with their mentallity and choice of entertainment. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW AS A CHILD? Faulty Towers. Monty Python. Some nature stuff. Tom + Jerry etc. Some chat shows. Not news or quiz!! DO YOU WEAR SOCKS IN BED? No! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DARKNESS? Not much. Seem like nice guys. I like AC/DC�.. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN/FORM A BAND? My early love for music/drums. Bands home videos. It just seemed to turn me on. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Whilst realising the small chance of financial security - practise, hard work, enjoy it.
