SCARLET SOHO + POP THREAT.
AT HULL MORIARTYS. 12/ 10/ 02.

Im going to be totally honest here. Until seeing them the other day, I never really liked Scarlet Soho. I was wrong though. Theyre actually really, really good. The venue, I say venue but mean dodgy backstreet pub, isnt really suited to holding gigs. There was further proof of that tonight. Scarlet Soho turned up to be told that the venue didnt have vital equipment which they needed to play in drum beats and samples.
This ment that they had to play a more stripped down than normal set. They performed sitting down rather than standing like they normally would. Due to the missing equipment, tracks including latest single Ruthless Animation could not be performed.
The three piece made up of guitarist Lee, singer Jim and sexy bassist Scarlet were understandably alittle pissed off with the venue. The pathetic turn out didnt exactly help matters. They carried on regardless though to deliver a short but sweet 25 minute set which included two takes of No Encore. Scarlet Soho are big down south but have yet to crack the north. The admission to this gig was completely free yet still only around 20 people could actually be bothered to turn up. I felt really sorry for the band. They are such loverly people, no big rock star ego etc.
Also on the bill were Leeds based Pop Threat. They formed back in 1998 and have had BBC TV and radio coverage. They were rather boring to watch, there was very little effort or energy in their performance. I would describe their music as pop rock. Their influences include Sonic Youth. Some of their tracks were quite catchy but there was nothing new or different about them, nothing to make them stand out. Their debut album is due for release in early 2003. I for one will not be buying it.
