| AN INTERVIEW WITH JIM FROM SCARLET SOHO. WHO IS IN SCARLET SOHO AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Lee,Guitars, programming, synths. Jim,Vocals, guitars, synths, drums, lyrics Scarlet,Bass, synths, lyrics HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER? Lee and Jim had been in a band previously. They met Scarlet at Reading Festival 99 whilst handing out "bassist wanted" fliers. Then everything clicked into place. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Futuristic, space-rock. Hospital cleanliness with a pulse. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? We like Depeche Mode, Japan, Elvis Costello, Babylon Zoo, Alec Empire. WHERE DID THE NAME SCARLET SOHO COME FROM? Scarlet after Scarlet. Soho cos we sound pretty scuzzy. YOU HAVE BEEN TOGETHER SINCE 1999. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Guildford Festival was pretty cool, playing on the same bill as has beens like James and Reef was really great! Our channel 4 documentary was good exposure too. Being noticed for a week or two was fun. I also liked doing the Faint and King Adora shows. Overall i guess our fanbase is our achievement. YOU DONT HAVE A DRUMMER. WHY? We feel very strongly about the drummer situation. A drummer does not have numerous sounds and textures to his/her drums but we do. We can pick sounds to suite songs. Depeche Mode played shows to 90,000 with a machine and we feel that it's mainly the UK that can't cope with futuristic sound. In other countries electronic music is almost always played with machines. Surely that's the point? Drums just seems so male, caveman like? IF YOU GOT TO MEET ANY OF YOUR HEROES, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? Hello. WHAT ARE THE BEST AND WORSE PARTS ABOUT TOURING? Best parts are people, playing, travelling and the sites. Worst parts are sound engineers, girls, lack of sleep and money. YOU HAVE A TOUR COMING UP. YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IT? Yes, we have some new material and intend to get a good reaction from it. We are playing some old haunts and a few new venues too. WHICH BANDS HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING LIVE WITH? We've only really enjoyed playing with the Faint. They are the only band that can keep out attention for the whole set! WILL YOU BE PLAYING ANY OF THIS SUMMERS FESTIVALS? We may do Guildford again. I think we will be mainly recording our album for Ninthwave over the Summer. WHICH OF YOUR LYRICS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? All of them. We spend hours getting them precise. WHAT FIVE THINGS COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? Eachother, music, future, money and hate. YOU JUST RECENTLY SIGNED A RECORD DEAL WITH AN AMERICAN RECORD COMPANY. HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT? Sent them a cd. Waited two weeks. Deal offerred. Lawyers negotiate. We sign. YOU PLAN TO RELEASE AN ALBUM THROUGH THEM. WILL IT BE AN AMERICAN ONLY RELEASE OR WILL FANS HERE BE ABLE TO BUY IT TOO? The full album will be a U.S only release, this will include our back catalogue. We will be doing an 8 track mini album for release here tho. That will be with Human Recordings. YOU HAVE A UNIQUE STYLE OF MUSIC. WOULD YOU SAY IT IS MORE SUITED TO AN AMERICAN AUDIENCE? Yes, i hope so anyway. The New York electronic movement is bursting with talent right now. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO TOUR THERE OR MAYBE EVEN MOVE THERE? If the album sells the first pressing of 5000 relatively quickly we will be touring there and possibly Germany too. Doubt we'd wanna live there tho. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POPSTARS AND FAME ACADEMY? We don't. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Write new songs, plan gigs, do interviews! LAST YEAR YOU RELEASED DISCONNECTED AS A SINGLE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT? Everything and nothing. YOU HAVE BEEN IN A LOT OF FANZINES. HAVE YOU HAD MUCH COVERAGE IN THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA? Not sure really? You tell me! YOU SEEM TO HAVE QUITE A DEDICATED FANBASE. WHAT DO YOUR FANS MEAN TO YOU? We think they are brave for liking us. We honour and worship them. Anyone who has met us knows we are sincere. Winning over total rock audiences and re-educating is hard. They appreciate our struggle. They are great. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? We try not to think about that one. The answer is always negative. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND FORM A BAND? We all started playing quite late. It was possibly the lack of good bands that prompted us. No-one really entertains these days. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Do it properly or not at all! ALL QUESTIONS BY MR MARTYN. |
