| AN INTERVIEW WITH RORY AND STUART FROM PINK GREASE. WHO IS IN PINK GREASE AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Rory - vocals, Steve - guitar, John - guitar, sax & synth, Nick - freaky homemade synths, Stuart - bass and chuckles, Marc - drums WHO ARE THE GREASETTES? Stuart - Sally, Polly and Nassa. They are our fabulous backing troupe, like Ike and the Ikettes, like any good sing along needs nine people all singing the chorus to give you that anthemic feel - just like we are the youth gone wild. Sorry you haven't seen them live for a wee while, it's been hard doing the headline tour on much smaller venues - guitars entering people's bodies on stage and that, we did a few gigs with them on the Ladytron support tour, and they will be appearing verry soon in the forthcoming sheffield independant roadkill movie "Creep Killers". HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM PINK GREASE TOGETHER? Rory - We were all the loudest, most obnoxious people we knew of and we'd always end up at the same parties, bringing the tone down together. Stuart - We dared each other to swallow our differences in the name of a truly ridiculously diverse line up. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Rory - Super-bitchen hardcore disco-glam rocknroll Stuart - yea, just like the man says, and then some WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Rory - Every-fuckin'-body - initially doo-wop, the New York Dolls, Roxy Music, the Sex Pistols, Joy Division and later Peaches, DAF and, oh, I don't know, Eminem and the Dr Who theme. Stuart - that's enough Rory, we've ripped off so many people lets not own up to it, Ahem. We are fresh and original, we are our own inspiration. Actually our influence is Toploader, we thought god if they can be successful, then we need to bring listeners to their senses! Rory - Basically we are influenced by the entirety of pop history. I don't think you can be alive now and not have an eclectic view of the world, there's so much information around. And every bit of information you receive from all the areas of your life, the people you know, the colours you see, the films you watch, the adverts you're forced to watch, they're all an influence on your life and art. We get compared to so many seemingly unrelated bands that we reckon we must be doing something original. WHERE DID THE NAME PINK GREASE COME FROM? Stuart - Flesh and lube. Rory - From a doo-wop/rocknroll record of mine. Steve painted the words onto a denim jacket while we were still called the Buttfuckers but when we abandoned that name (all our female friends hated it) and were looking for another the fabled words 'pink grease' floated into our heads at exactly the same time, and we knew that it was right. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE SCENE IN GREASE THE MUSICAL? Stuart - Grease Lightning flying off into the sky? The Wacky House at the fair? Thunder road? Kenickie's uncanny resemblance to Keith Richards? No it has to be the sex on the beach of course! YOURE BASED IN SHEFFIELD. WHAT IS THE MUSIC SCENE LIKE THERE? Rory - Spacious. No one band seems to be like any other, there's enough room here for everyone to operate without treading on anyone's toes. Stuart - Big up to Kings Have Long Arms, Supreme Vagabond Craftsman, Toah Dynamic, Fat Truckers. Up and coming tips: Hiem, Kid Acne and the Unfolds! TELL US ABOUT YOUR MINI ALBUM, ALL OVER YOU. Rory - We recorded it a year ago in full view of the Empire State Building over four oppressively hot days and nights with Jason Buckle, ex- of Fat Truckers and now half of Relaxed Muscle. It's real sloppy, greasy, high-powered electro rocknroll and when I hear it I can feel real New York summer sweat seeping from its grooves. It seems such a long time ago now, we were all so young then! DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER RELEASES WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? Rory - A 7" called Working All Day/Manhattan On Fire and a 12" called Waiting So Long/Soul Paco/"Shake". Both were independent, vinyl-only releases, recorded in Sheffield several months before the mini-album. Waiting So Long apart, they were recorded before we met Jason Buckle and have a harder, more stripped rock/electro sound which we're returning to now. Stuart - And coming real soon is our Nasty Show DVD, a live montage car crash of a video. WHERE CAN FANS GET HOLD OF SAID RELEASES? Rory - I think we have some copies of the 12" left, available through pinkgrease.com, and you can order it through independent record stores. You'll have to hunt for the other one though, I'm afraid. The DVD'll be available at record stores and through our website as well. DO YOU PREFER EYELINER PENCILS OR LIQUID EYELINER? Rory - Liquid eyeliner, goddamn it, although there's nothing wrong with kohl. But when liquid eyeliner doesn't dry properly before you go onstage and you sweat it into your eyes it's pretty painful. WHEN AND WHERE WAS THE FIRST PINK GREASE GIG? Rory - The first Buttfuckers gig was in late 2000 at a party where loads of bands were playing; we were fucking hyper and glammed up to the nines and just terrorized the whole room. Ten minutes afterwards I puked. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Rory - We get hyper with nervous energy, bouncing off the walls, babbling shit - the nervousness feeds the performance, any tension just comes out as onstage weirdness. Stuart - I don't get nervous, I get confident usually, heavens I am a horrible show off. I do get tipsy, maybe that's related to nerves? No, I'm just a real man. WHICH BANDS ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? Rory - I'm listening to James Brown, Busta Rhymes, DAF and the Beatles. But that's just today. Stuart - Yardbirds, Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, Queen, anything on commercial radio. WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING ALBUM YOU OWN? Stuart - They give them all to me, and I love them. IF YOU HAD ONE DAY LEFT TO LIVE, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT? Stuart - I don't know but I would do a whole lot of embarrassing things that I haven't got around to yet. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE OFFICIAL UK TOP 40? Rory - This week it's pretty lame. It waxes and wanes, but everything good inspires you and everything shit makes you wanna do better. It's always good to be aware of. Stuart - There's some great pop out there, the Cheeky Girls new tune isn't that bad, it makes you smile enough. Rory - Shut up, Stu. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND? Rory - probably watching Jerry Lee Lewis on TV when I was a kid. Or Michael Jackson. Stuart - Stereophonics, for the same reasons as Toploader (see above). WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Rory - Don't do it unless you really, really wanna. Stuart - Ignore that kids, don't take it seriously, for the closer you close your grip the more it slips through your fingers, and it is a horrible sight seeing someone crushed by their ambition. Enjoy it, as they say music is its own reward. Rory - Yes, if you're not after fame & fortune then my advice is to take it as seriously as it deserves but not so seriously that you become boring. ALL QUESTIONS BY MR MARTYN. |
