AN INTERVIEW WITH....
LUKE FROM NOT KATIES.

SO WHO IS IN NOT KATIES AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO?
Hi there, we are Rich (vocals) Dave (guitar) Luke (drums) Ewan (bass) and new boy Nick (guitar)
WHEN AND WHY DID NEIL LEAVE THE BAND?
Neil our other guitarist left the band recently because he discovered that there were aspects of being in a bad that he didn't enjoy that we all did. So it just kinda did'nt work out, we're all still great friends though- Rich still shares a flat with him in fact.
HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER?
All four of us (the original members) did the same film degree at Uni, so we played in different combinations of bands with each other untill we all sort of came together and realised that we four were very commited towards the same goals.
WHAT DID YOU GET EACH OTHER FOR CHRISTMAS?
I'm slightly ashamed to say that we didn't get each other anything cos it was a general understanding that we were all broke!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
We'd describe ourselves as a rock band that draws heavily on elements of punk, pop, hardcore and even old school metal.
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
We all have very differemt individual influences, but in terms of our sound I'd probably say: Saves the Day... The Cure... Idlewild... The Movielife. Kinda poppy but still edgy stuff really.
WHERE DID THE NAME NOT KATIES COME FROM?
It comes from a girl named Katie that a friend's band wanted to dis-associate themselves with. So we thought it sounded cool and took it. It doesn't mean that much really.
IF YOU WERE ALL CONTESTANTS ON THE SAME EDITION OF THE WEAKEST LINK WHICH OF
YOU WOULD LAST LONGEST?
I reckon I would cos I'm quite good at general knowledge, but then again if there were any sport-type questions the others would probably whup me cos I'm crap at sports. I throw like a girl... really I do.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN A LIFETIME OF FREE AND AVAILABLE SEX OR A
LIFETIME OF FREE AND AVAILABLE BOOZE AND FAGS, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Sex. I don't smoke and I much prefer hanky panky over being drunk.
YOUVE TOURED WITH LOTS OF DIFFERENT BANDS. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED
PLAYING WITH AND WHY?
I guess our most enjoyable tour so far was with The Bouncing Souls and Tsunami Bomb through Europe cos we got to see so many rad sites and both bands were incredibly nice. Tsunami Bomb taught us what 'cock-blocking' was. It's when you purposely muscle in on you friend when they are trying to get it on with a girl, either for your own sexual gain, or in our case just to piss off your friend. It's pretty funny watching them get mad.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE?
I think we all used to, but you kinda get used to it and now we only get nervous if our friends or someone 'important' is there to see you.
HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET?
It's pretty much balls to the walls from start to finish at the moment cos when you're trying to get better known you wanna grab peoples attention. But I think as we start to do more long headlining sets, we'll introduce some down-time and different dynamics.
WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING?
At the moment it's one called 'The Hope You Choke' cos it's a pretty full on rocking song, probably the hardest song we've written so far.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG?
Cos I'm the drummer, it usually means that I have to get the kit sorteded out and off stage if we're supporting, and if not then I'll run over to the merch to try and get people interested in buying stuff.
IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU?
Yeah it can be I guess. It sounda kinda big headed but more often then not when there is very few people at a gig it means that the promoter hasn't done their job and not the bands fault which can be frustrating.
WHICH TOWNS/VENUES ARE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING ON YOUR FORTHCOMING TOUR?
We love playing Worcester, last time we were there we felt like proper rock stars as we were having to spray water on the kids up at the front as they were getting crushed by the mosh!
WILL YOU BE PLAYING ANY OF THE SUMMER FESTIVALS?
Hmmm, I dunno.. I've heard that their might be at least one on the cards but I'm not sure yet. It'd be great cos we haven't played one yet.
DOES EATING CHEESE GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES?
That's a rad question cos I love easting cheese before I go to bed, it gives me really fantastic and vivid dreams. I hate it when you spleep without dreaming it feels like you're living your life slightly shorter. Sometimes I go out of my way to eat it. Apricot stilton is the best... no shit.
MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY, WHICH OF THE SONGS YOU'VE WRITTEN IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
I think one of our new songs called 'Strike it, Revese it' is my favourite. It's about someone who thinks you're going nowhere and that you know you're going to prove them wrong.
WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS?
Yeah we already cover one song by the Lemonheads called 'Ruderless' and we've been thinking about doing another one, but we don't know what yet.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND?
For me personally I would freeking love to appear on top of the pops. I'm sorry if that sounds sad but it's what i've always wanted to achieve.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EP.
It's five tracks of ace rock songs. It's a bit different from our last cd though, a bit more rock and kinda harder then our last cd which was more pop-punk... I mean it's still got the pop bits and the punky vibe but it'd just different and if you didn't like the last cd you should check it out cos I think you'll be suprised.
ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ITS RELEASE?
Totally. It's our baby, and even though we recorded it in November last year I still listen to it almost every day to remind myself of how proud I am with it.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW AS A CHILD?
Cliche alert... it was transformers.
WHAT IS IT LIKE SEEING YOURSELVES IN MAGAZINES AND HEARING YOUR SONGS ON THE
RADIO ETC?
It's quite unreal. I think "that's a picture/song by us... but there's lots of people seeing/hearing this and not just me"!
DO YOU FEEL FAMOUS?
Not in the slightest. I still feel like a lower-middle class 23 year old from the south of england, which isn't too bad a place to be really.
WHICH DO YOU ENJOY DOING THE MOST... WRITING SONGS, RECORDING THEM OR
PLAYING THEM LIVE?
It'd be easy to say writing and recording cos that's were you get the cool feeling of having put a song together. But you don't do writing and recording that much, where as you gig all the time so that's like as much fun but it's spread over longer periods.
WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND?
Who doesn't want to pick up a guitar or hit a drum kit? There is someting inheriently cool and vicarious about playing an instrument, I think I've wanted to ever since I can remember.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND?
Make sure you have generous parents who will bail you out when the going gets tough!
