AN INTERVIEW WITH..
MATT FROM MOWER.

WHO IS IN MOWER AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO?
Matt Mower; (guitar, vocals), John Mower; (Drums, backing vocals), Nash Mower; (Bass, backing vocals)
HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM MOWER TOGETHER?
We all met at the audition to replace the original bassist & drummer. They had split up just prior to releasing the 1st Mower LP.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
A good old fashioned Mowdown!
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
Brian Wilson, Syd Barrett, Ray davies, Steve Malkmus, Beatles
WHERE DID THE NAME MOWER COME FROM?
When Matt was 10 he used to dance in front of the telly with his arms in front of him like he was pushing a lawnmower. The name stuck.
YOU HAVE A NEW SINGLE, THE MORNING AFTER. TELL US ABOUT IT.
The Morning after is a song about waking up in a strange bed after a one night stand & feeling cheap & nasty. Hence the chorus "Keep losing sleep because I'm cheap & nasty". It' a simple pop song really It's not supposed to be complicated.
IT IS TAKEN FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM, PEOPLE ARE CRUEL.
WHERE DID THE NAME FOR THE ALBUM COME FROM?
It was originally a song title which we decided to make the LP title because it seemed to sum up all the various themes on the LP..love ,sex, regret, war, dictatorship, drepression...etc. the LP is not all serious as After Dark & The Morning After show
ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ITS RELEASE?
It feels fantastic to just walk into HMV and see a rack with our LP. The first LP was far more of a low key release but this feels like the next level.
YOU ARE BASED IN SOUTH LONDON.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER BANDS FROM THAT AREA WE SHOULD BE LOOKING OUT FOR?
The Capes
YOU HAVE TOURED WITH BANDS SUCH AS BRITISH SEA POWER AND JET.
WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY?
BSP were the best to play with by miles. We didn't expect to feel so much in common with them but we all became fans on that tour. They were really good to us and after a few shows they allowed us to finish the tour travelling on their double decker with them which saved us so much cash (support bands get fuck all!) & helped us concentrate on doing good shows every night. We learned a lot from them & came away a much better band. Jet were also nice to us but their music was not really our bag & I don't think they understood exactly where we were coming from either! Still..we were grateful to be asked on that tour too.
IF YOU COULD PLAY WITH ANY OTHER BAND IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
We were told we could support the Kinks at a show in Twickenham recently but we were on tour with jet. It would have been nice to play RIP & Just say No in front of Ray & see what he thought!!!
WHEN AND WHERE WAS THE FIRST MOWER GIG?
The first with this line up was at the Barfly, Camden in Oct 2001
DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE?
Yes but we are getting the better of it now with experience...it used to make us do very bizarre things on stage..forgetting chords, smashing gear etc but we would rather channel it into playing well now. I don't ever want to not be nervous onstage because it's such an important part of performing.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY?
Corporate, bingo, Kareoke bullshit
WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING ALBUM YOU OWN?
"Val Donigan Rocks...But Gently"
IF YOU HAD ONE DAY LEFT TO LIVE, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT?
Mowdowning
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST REGRET SO FAR IN LIFE?
Not remembering my biggest regret
WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND?
Boredom
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND?
Make sure that any members arn't gonna turn into egotistical twats if you make it!
