KING ADORA + THE GLITTERATI.
AT YORK FIBBERS. 28/ 11/ 03.

The Glitterati are a glammy rock type band. A rather good one in fact. The band, Paul (vocals), Nick (guitar), Jamie (bass), John (guitar) and Billy (drums), served an apprenticeship in various bands around Leeds before forming The Glitterati and are now living together in south London. They have just released their debut single Do You Love Yourself? It reached number 75 in the chart. Id never even heard of them until this gig. I was very impressed though.
The had a tight set, a good stage presence and some great songs. They look good. They sound good. They will be massive.
But no offense guys, I wasnt there to see you. All I wanted was to see King Adora again for the first time in over two years. They made a low key entrance on to the stage but soon got into the swing of things with set opener 9 Inches Of Pure Malice. The track is the B-Side to their latest single. It was quickly followed by Smoulder, a classic track taken from debut album Vibrate You.
The crowd seemed lively during the songs but fell almost silent between them. The band seemed to be enjoying themselves though and Maxi often spoke, joked and flirted with the 200 or so fans present. Gorgeous new single Drag is way better live than on CD. SuperMuffDiver followed it. Quite why it wasnt released as a single Ill never know. It was one of the highlights from the first album and one of the highlights of the gig.
A number of new tracks were included in the around 40 minute set, tracks such as The Depression and Boy 4 Rent. Both of which are fantastic and both of which should hopefully feature on album number two, due for release in February.
The Nelsta had a few problems with his effects pedals during Boys 4 Rent so Maxi organised a heckling competition while said problems were sorted. The crowd had to shout abuse at the band and the best heckler won a prize. The prize being a cheer from the crowd.
Kamikaze was followed by Big Isnt Beautiful. The track still sounds sooooooo good. Singles Suffocate and Bionic also featured later in the set, a set which was probably one of the longest they have performed. When I saw them in 2001 they were on stage for a total of 27 minutes.
Despite cheering for an encore it didnt happen. Dan seemed keen to venture back on stage but Maxi definitely didnt. He went to sit outside. The poor lad wasnt well. He was later spotted collapsed on the floor near the toilet with his head in his arms. I wanted to chat with him but he didnt look like he was in a very talkative mood. I left him alone. 10 days on the road had clearly taken its toll.
Was a good night overall, but where was the glitter and confetti? Where were the party poppers and the feather boas? Where were the glammy peeps of York? It was very strange. A King Adora gig without the glam factor. Apart from the peeps on the front few rows, the venue seemed to be filled with students there not because King Adora were playing but there just because it was a night out. The atmosphere last time the band played York was miles better. On this occasion Friday night went with a bang but sadly did not explode.
