| AN INTERVIEW WITH.... STEVE FROM FONY. WHO IS IN FONY AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Olly Gibbens - Vocals, Phil Bashford - Guitars, Steve Gush - Guitars, Ryan Harris - Bass and Pete Hamilton - Drums HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM FONY TOGETHER? Pete and Phil formed the band back at college in late '98, me (steve) and Olly joined about 6 months later when the original vocalist and bassist left. Some line up changes and an couple of demos and an album later we arrive at the current line up with me now on Guitar (i used to be the bassist) and Ryan the new guy who we audtioned long and hard to find! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Rock with the occasional hardcore moment. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Everything from Jeff Buckley to DJ Hype! YOUVE JUST RELEASED YOUR NEW ALBUM CIRCLES. WHERE DID THE NAME FOR THE ALBUM COME FROM? This is our second album and for us it feels like starting over again, doing all the same things but with a little less naivety! ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ITS RELEASE? Definitely, everyone involved is real excited about all the new material. WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM IT? A rollercoaster of a record that gives you everything from manic hard core to acoustic solos and hammond organs. HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM YOUR DEBUT ALBUM? We were much more prepared going into it so the whole vibe of the record is much more thought out and mature. WHICH TRACK ON THE ALBUM WAS THE HARDEST TO WRITE LYRICS FOR? Olly had loads of lyrics written before the music was even finished, it was simply a case of slotting everything together so i don't think any one track was hardest. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS? Weve always talked about doing covers and jam quite alot in practices. maybe one day we'll have the patience to sit down and learn one properly! WHAT IS IT LIKE SEEING YOURSELVES IN MAGAZINES ETC? it's really weird, I always wish they picked a better photo! DO YOU FEEL FAMOUS? not at all. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? I never used to, but now that I'm playing guitar everything's different. The more gigs you do the less nervous you get but you will always get nervous! HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? Much the same as we structure an album, It's got to have it's highs and lows. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? at the moment 'a satire for the world' but it'll probably change WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? have a beer and a cigarette....or run around packing up our gear! YOU HAVE TOURED WITH LOTS OF BANDS BUT WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? Every tour has it's good points and every tour's different, but our first tour with Vacant Stare and Janus Stark (themoreisee) is still my favourite because it was so new and exciting, we had a really good vibe on the bus aswell. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DARKNESS? They rule, i don't care what anyone says...I'm a big lover of guitar solos! WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? making difference in someones life, many bands have done that for me I hope that some day we will return the favour. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY? I guess they have their place...they'll always just be someone form a TV program tho with limited shelf life! WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND FORM A BAND? Slash...he is a god! WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Stick at it, if you give up you'll never get there...sounds obvious but most people give up at the first hurdle! ALL QUESTIONS BY MR MARTYN. |
