| AN INTERVIEW WITH. JO FROM EASYWORLD. FOR THOSE WHO DONT ALREADY KNOW, WHO IS IN EASYWORLD AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Dav Ford -vocals, guitar, piano, keyboard, mandolin, harmonica Glenn Hooper -drums, percussion, melodica, backing vocals, melon Jo Taylor -bass, keyboard, backing vocals, occasional piano, UN peacekeeper HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM EASYWORLD TOGETHER? Eastbourne is a small community and most of the musicians know each other or have been in a band together at some point. We were all of a like mind and interests and I (Jo) had an advert in a local music shop which Glenn replied to as his and Dav's bass player had just gone to University. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Dav is very much into Bob Dylan at the moment, as well as Ben Folds Five, REM, Jeff Buckley, Beck and Weezer, although he usually cites William Shakespeare and his father as his main influences! Glenn is also a massive Ben Folds fan, and also really likes Mull Historical Society, OK Go and The Amber Shades. I'm into U2, Mansun, Ian McCulloch, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and whatever takes my fancy this week! WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO CALL YOURSELVES EASYWORLD? It was decided that we should change our name from Beachy Head, it being a rubbish name n'all, and that we should use something representative of the band. At the time Dav was in the middle of writing Better Ways To Self Destruct, which contains the line, 'it's an easy world'. The idea is that life is as easy or hard as you want to make it for yourself, all problems are man-made but largely summountable. YOURE FROM EASTBOURNE. WHAT IS THE MUSIC SCENE LIKE THERE? There is no music scene to speak of, unless you count the covers-in-pubs circuit. There isn't a music venue as such, the rehearsal room above us is the closest thing, they hold gigs; the Winter Garden had a few bands between '95 and '98 such as Blur and Fungus, but that seems to have stopped! The nearest venues are in Brighton or Hastings. There's no shortage of up and coming bands here, and I don't think it's a negative thing that they have to aspire to play further afield. LOCAL BOYS TOPLOADER RECENTLY SPLIT UP. ARE YOU UPSET BY THIS?! It's obviously sad when anything ends but I hope they are positive about the potential to do something new- when the record company dropped them we were on tour with them at the time and they had a very upbeat attitude about the whole thing, I don't think they were getting what was best for them there, so there's something to be said for their new-found freedom! IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WANTED TO BE A HELICOPTER PILOT IN THE ARMY?! It is I'm afraid! I'm a pacifist, hate war and anything of which the sole purpose is to injure or kill others, but I like routine, achievement, encouragement, cameraderie, nice outfits and travel. It was fortunate that my eyesight is too bad to join the army or I might never have realised that you can get all those things from being in a band! YOU HAVE TOURED ALONGSIDE LOADS OF DIFFERENT BANDS. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? I think we've been incredibly lucky with the bands we've worked alongside, I'm sure some bands are a pain! Everyone's been great, it's kind of unfair to pick a favourite. The King Adora tours were special to us not only because they were our first two tours but also because we learnt so much and had a wonderful time doing it. The Bluetones tour was very cool because we loved their songs when we were at college and never thought we'd end up playing with them. We've also had lots of good support acts on our headline tours. It seems unfair to single people out as they've all been splendid. IF YOU COULD PLAY WITH ANYBODY ELSE. WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? U2 would be nice. Why????? Come on... WILL YOU BE PLAYING ANY OF THE SUMMER FESTIVALS? We're playing Middlesborough Festival on the 26th. As for the others, we'll have to wait and see, it's always great to do the festivals, we've had a great couple of years at Reading and Leeds, but I don't mind if we don't, as we've got a tour coming up... I HEARD THAT YOU WILL BE TOURING DURING JULY. IS THIS TRUE? Ah, nice link. Yes, it is true. But you'll have to keep your eyes on the website for further details, at easyworldinfo.com DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Sometimes. If I'm cold beforehand it makes me nervous, and Dav will do his going to the loo 27 times trick. I never know whether Glenn is nervous or not, he's usually just fired up and raring to go. Sometimes you're just excited and ready to take on the world and other times if you've had a technical problem or have changed the set it can get the adrenalin going a bit more. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Collapse in a heap, look at each other and go, "well that was shit" or "that was amazing!". It's rare that we all have the same kind of gig. We wind down for a bit, I usually drop into a low for half an hour, and then we have a beer and enjoy the rest of the night. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF OTHER GLAMMY TYPE BANDS SUCH AS RACHEL STAMP, PHLUID AND KING ADORA? I wouldn't say that we are glammy. We certainly appeal to a wide cross-section of people which is brilliant, the variety of songs means hopefully that there's something for everyone. But I don't really know Rachel Stamp or Phluid's material. King Adora we love to pieces, both musically and as people. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECTS AT SCHOOL? English, Art, Science and Hockey. Ah, the exhilaration of tearing across a hockey pitch in the cold air, screaming like a warrior and wiping out the opposition's ankles... WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POPSTARS AND FAME ACADEMY? As long as people realise that they are gameshows for high ratings and nothing to do with music or art then that's fine. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I am starting a second-hand clothes store next to our rehearsal room, called The Dressing Room, also I like reading and watching movies. It's also important to make use of living so close to the sea, it's very therapeutic to go down to the shore and throw rocks into the waves. WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING A FAN HAS GIVEN YOU? The stick of asparagus we were asked to sign at Middlesborough was fairly weird, but actually given... a large blue battery powered vibrating fluffy bouncy toy that yells, "I FEEL BOUNCY!" It's very cool tho. WHAT WILL IT YOURE NEW ALBUM BE CALLED AND WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED? It will be called 'Kill The Last Romantic" and will be out later this year. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE EASYWORLD TRACK AND WHY? All I Can Remember from the new album, because when Dav brought it to rehearsal for the first time it made me cry, and it was the first of his tunes to do that to me. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN/FORM A BAND? I love music and want to do it for the rest of my life, simple as that. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Have faith, watch your back and remember to enjoy yourself. ALL QUESTIONS BY MR MARTYN. |
