THE ANTI-FOLK PACKAGE FEATURING DUFUS AND MEMBERS OF THE MOLDY PEACHES. AT THE HULL ADELPHI. 20/ 11/ 02.
Everytime we venture into the Adelphi is totally different from the time before. The other night saw New Yorks finest turn up there as part of the Anti-Folk Package. It was a massive line up. The amount of musicians was probably equal to the amount of punters. It was a great atmosphere. TOBY GOODSHANK played first. He can usually be found playing guitar for The Moldy Peaches but tonight he was going it alone. One man with his guitar. His solo stuff was quite similar to that of The Moldy Peaches though. His lyrics were very witty. His final song was about the sounds giraffes make! It sounds mean but I cant actually remember that much about MAJOR MATT MASON. I seem to remember that he was quite good though, alittle like Toby Goodshank but not as funny. A guy from Mistys Big Adventure helped out on a couple of tracks by playing that weird metal thing The Flaming Lips and The Polyphonic Spree use. Then came the person I was most looking forward to seeing, another member from The Moldy Peaches, KIMYA DAWSON. I didnt reconise her at first though. She normally dresses up in weird rabbit suits etc etc. Tonight she was just wearing a normal top with normal jeans. It soon became apparent who she was though when she started to sing. She has a very distinctive cute, soft and gentle, almost child like voice. A voice I really, really love. I was kind of hoping she would sing a couple of tracks by The Moldy Peaches but this didnt happen. Someone in the crowd requested Nothing Came Out. Kimya reacted to this by saying she didnt do cover versions. Instead, like Toby, she decided to just stick to her own solo material. Which wasnt a bad thing. It was all very good. She was certainly enjoying herself and let one of the guys on tour with her choose her entire set. This included tracks she hadnt performed in months, resulting in her forgetting a lot of the lyrics. Both she and the crowd found this hilarious. I ended up sat on the floor next to Kimya for JEFF LEWIS. He was in high sprits but that is understandable. It was his birthday. His set was really weird. It included a 15-minute ramble about something. Cant remember what but I doubt it was anything important. He had storybooks to accompany a couple of his tracks. The guy is a genius. Headliners DUFUS were fantastic. After a night of acoustic based sets came this full on rock band. They opened with an uplifting party anthem for which they were joined onstage by every one of the nights performers. The highlight of their set was their final track that was about underwear. Afterwards I went backstage for a quick chat. Toby Goodshank was half asleep, Kimya was all cute and loverly and the main Dufus geezer shook my hand. Was a good night. I gave them interviews. Hope they get filled in.
