| AN INTERVIEW WITH... CRAIG FROM DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS. WHO IS IN DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Craig Macintosh Lead vocals, guitar Gary Smith B/vox, guitar Laurence Davey Drums Lee Worrall Bass Ruth Quigley B/vox, keys WHERE DID THE DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS COME FROM? There are lots of different theories. Lee told the NME we were sucking on a helium filled balloon and it slipped out. That one seems to be popular :0) You should never know the truth about some things. It's safer that way HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER? Lee, Gary and Laurence met at nursery school but had to wait until High School to meet Craig and form a band. Ruth joined about a year and a half ago. We used to practice when we were kids in Laurences basement with two power chords to write from. It's developed a bit since then......... HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? I wouldn't if given the choice. I think it's too easy and if anything this band is about not having labels and being easily pidgeon holed so we try to stay clear of things like that. Ultimately we just want to make music that people enjoy that isn't depressing and worthy of nothing but shoe gazing. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Influences come from everywhere. It's not just from music. We grew up listening to Nirvana and the Chilli Peppers but we sound nothing like any of them. The sound of the bus going down the road can be as much of an influence as anything. MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY, WHICH OF THE SONGS YOU'VE WRITTEN IS YOUR FAVOURITE? On the album there's a track called 'Apples and Oranges' that I always enjoy. Tracks like 'Paul Newman's Eyes' are always a big favourite when we play live. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING ANY COVERS? Possibly but only if you'd never heard of it and then only if we did it completely differently to the original otherwise what's the point? DO YOU WEAR SOCKS IN BED? You've been in our house haven't you? I'll remember to lock the front door in future YOUVE TOURED WITH LOTS OF DIFFERENT BANDS IN THE PAST. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? We've played with Hope of The States, Athlete, Feeder, Shack, The Stands etc. The Dead 60's supported us on one tour and they were good lads but the best tour was with the Zutons. We co-headlined about 20 dates. They're a great band and really nice as people so that was the most enjoyable so far. DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? Not really though when we last played London their were touts outside our gig for the first time selling tickets at inflated prices. I'd be lying if I said I didn't say that was strange to see for us. HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? You can give too much thought to that sort of thing. It's been known for the crowd to almost structure the set when we get out on stage. We usually have a planned set but I can't remember the l;ast time we stuck to it. A guitar string will go or a keyboard break down and you find yourself having to make it up on the spot. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? We've often played Lounger last and that's a great song to just let go on so it's definitely up there. The crowd generally dictate that as well. Whichever gets the biggest response on the night can give the biggest buzz. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Drink. I sweat buckets on stage so I usually need to replace some fluid DO YOU EVER GET HOMESICK WHILE ON TOUR? Well so far it's been the same people on tour as at home. I hear some bands moaning about being on tour but you have to say why are you in a band then? It's the best life, getting to play the songs you've written to people you've never met before! IS IT DISHEARTENING ON THE NIGHTS FEW PEOPLE TURN UP TO SEE YOU? We've been lucky so far in that we're not having to experience that but that's not to say that we haven't been there and done it in the past. Every band goes through a bit of that when they start out....... it's good for you. WHICH TOWNS/VENUES DO YOU MOST ENJOY PLAYING? It's always great playing in Scotland but probably the best shows are when you walk out on stage somewhere like Sheffield and it's packed. Lee's got a soft spot for Lincoln as he signed his first tit there. WILL YOU BE PLAYING AT ANY OF THE SUMMER FESTIVALS? Yeah we are already confirmed for a few. We are playing the NME stage at T in the Park. We played the new band stage there last year so that is going to be both great and weird for us. We are playing others but they are yet to be announced so I can't tell you yet. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FLAVOUR OF CRISP? Today it's roast chicken. Not sure abvout tomorrow yet? Is that important to you? DO YOU EVER READ MESSAGES FANS LEAVE ON YOUR FORUM? Yeah and we try and reply when emails come in. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? It changes every day. It's usually just to get through to the next day ha. YOU HAVE A NEW SINGLE, 'GODHOPPING'. WHAT IS THE TRACK ABOUT? I said before that somethings should never be explained. Make of it what you will. YOU'VE FINISHED RECORDING THE DEBUT ALBUM. WHEN IS IT COMING OUT? Should be middle of July but we'll have another single out before then WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM IT? To smile YOU GOT ANY POSSIBLE TITLES FOR IT YET? Touchy subject at the moment :0) We'll get back to you on that ANY INTERESTING TALES FROM THE STUDIO YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US? Goats do Rome - It's highly intoxicating wine. Have a few bottles and make up your own tales......... WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND? What else is worth doing? WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Think long and hard ha! ALL QUESTIONS BY SCREAMING TARTS. |
