| AN INTERVIEW WITH.... GEN FROM DEFENESTRATION. WHO IS IN DEFENESTRATION AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO? Gen: vocals, Jay: guitar, Rob: guitar, Scott: bass and Kieran: drums. HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM DEFENESTRATION TOGETHER? Me, Jay and Rob went to the same school but got together as a band when we had left, Scott replaced our bass player of the time and that was around four years ago. We have been through lots of drummers, Kieran is our fourth! We knew him before he was in the band, he played in a band in corby. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Its hard when people ask this, I guess the best way to describe it would be metal with a punky edge. We have been cmpared to Raging Speedhorn nut I think its just cos we're from the same area and we are always compared to other bands with girl singers, but that is lazy journalism! We don't sound like any of them! WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? We draw our influences from many sources. You can hear a bit of Iron Maiden and AC/DC in the guitars, but the tempo has really punked up the new stuff. We are listening t alot of Turbo Negro, but I hope my lyrics aren't influenced by them!! Sometimes, especially in the old stuff, a few Sabbathy riffs are there but played dead heavy so it sounds Will Haven-esque in places. Our drummer used to play jazz so that has brought in a new aspect too.. YOU HAVE A NEW ALBUM, �RAY ZERO�. WHERE DID THE NAME FOR THE ALBUM COME FROM? Ray Zero is the name of the shittest man in the world. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT IT�S RELEASE? Its about time!! I always get excited about stuff like this. It has had mixed reviews, either really good or really bad but we don't care! This album is us! Its how we sound and we are proud of it! WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM IT? Its a more honest album. There is alot of variety in there, we wrote the songs with three different drummers and over a period when we grew up alot. Its alot more raw than before, we wanted to capture a feeling, rather than something that sounded over-worked. HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM YOUR DEBUT ALBUM, �ONE INCH GOD�? We felt that One Inch God was a bit over-produced. It captured us at the stage we were at but we didn't really have our own identity then. We have found our feet on this album. Ray Zero is just us, put in a studio, recorded without any messing. The songs are naturally better and theres a hell of alot more energy because we have so much to prove!! WHICH TRACK ON THE ALBUM WAS THE HARDEST TO WRITE LYRICS FOR? I think it would be "Ride the Snake", when I heard the music for it all i could think was shouty shouty but I wanted desperatly to be more clever than that, I tried and tried but it was just meant to be the way it is! I said to the boys "help me!" and they said, "just shout for fucks sake!" So I did! It was easy after that. The whole song is shouted but its got the cutest lyrics on the album, its defens love song... WHAT IS IT LIKE SEEING YOURSELVES IN MAGAZINES ETC? I don't know what it IS like but I remember what it used to be like! It's going to be so hard this time to get anywhere near as much support from the magazines and stuff this time. DO YOU FEEL FAMOUS? No! There are some places i can go and I still get recognised, normally rock clubs when I'm really pissed so probably really lairy and embarrassing!! DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? I get nervous before every single gig! But thats part of it for me. The boys always have a few to drink so they are too drunk to feel anything but drunk! HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR SET? We have a song theat works good at the beginning (at the moment, Blood Song which opens Ray Zero) and a song which is good at the end (the new improved Mushrom God from One Inch God) then just fit the others in depending on how long the set is to be. We play a few old ones and spread them out in there. WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PERFORMING? "Break the Edge" because its an arse shaking song and i love to shake my ass!! WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG? Get the shots in!! I don't drink before i go on for fear of sounding like a pub crooner! YOU HAVE TOURED WITH BANDS INCLUDING RAGING SPEEDHORN AND MEGADETH. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY? Therapy? They went from being one of those good bands that i'd heard a few songs of when i was growing up to being the best band ever for me! It was our first time into europe and they looked after us so well, they are an ace band and really good mates of ours. I'd love to tour with them again...hint hint! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DARKNESS? I like the lights on when i sleep....nah seriously I think they are ace! I bought the album for my Dad's 50th birthday present. I feel proud of them too because they have done so well and they are British! WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT YOU COULD MAKE AS A BAND? just to keep going no matter what. We have come across so many hurdles already and will come to so many more, the biggest achievement for us would to keep going until we are happy with what we have done. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS POP IDOL AND FAME ACADEMY? Don't really watch them much, sometimes flick over to them though. That exact same thing has been going on for years, just without the cameras. Its the way pop works. WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND FORM A BAND? I have no idea!! I was painfully shy and always wanted to go to university! What happened to me?!? I think Jay did it to pick up chicks...hasn't worked yet though... WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND? Don't bother....nah seriously...don't bother..I can't say that! It's really hard work but the best thing in the world!! Just keep trying and listen to peoples advice...but not everyones (become good at knowing who to listen to and who not to...then do what you want anyway!) Hope for everything, expect nothing.
