AN INTERVIEW WITH.
DAVID R BLACK.

WHO IS IN DAVID R BLACK AND WHAT DOES EACH MEMBER DO?
David R - vocals/guitar, Sarit Black - bass/vocals, Pai - drums
HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND COME TO FORM A BAND TOGETHER?
Sarit: We were all in bands to start with and we knew each other as we practised in the same rehearsal building (Apocalypse Studios) so after my band and Pai's band had split up, Dave's last band was on the verge of splitting (and I nearly joined that band but that's a different story) and basically Dave, with the guitar player from his last band and myself on drums did a kind of side project while his other band were falling to bits and that's how David R Black came about, but when the guitarist left and it was just me and Dave I moved onto bass guitar, he moved back onto guitar and we asked Pai to join cos he's a cool drummer and we all want nothing else but this band to go all the way. For a more detailed (and possibly less confusing account of how we met and formed this band see our web biog http://www.davidrblack.net/biog/index.php)
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC?
Dave: Dark alternative rock
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
Dave: Varied really, the first stuff I listened to tended to be the Rolling Stones but everything from Husker Du, Janes Addiction, Killing Joke, At the Drive-In or any other alternative and off-kilter music. Sarit: Nirvana and Manics were very influencial - they were the first bands I was really in to. But Soundgarden and Aerosmith were the ones that made me want to spend my life playing music. Pai: Alice In Chains, Metallica, Nirvana, Guns 'n Roses - bands like that.
WHERE DID THE NAME DAVID R BLACK COME FROM?
David Roy Naylor is David R, and the black part of the name comes from Sarit Black - we originally formed the band, but so that Pai doesn't feel left out we say his middle name is Rodriguez hence the R.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RELEASES WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
'...is a Spell' released March 02, '3 live in the Nederlands' released June 02, '3' released September 02, 'Tinderbox' released 3rd March 03. We will be releasing a 5 or 6 track CD called 'Trinity' at the beginning of 2004.
WHERE CAN FANS GET THESE FROM?
www.1000watt.com or from any of our gigs.
YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH BANDS INCLUDING 3 COLOURS RED AND ANTIPRODUCT. WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH AND WHY?
Dave: That's a difficult one really as different bands and different tours have good points and bad points for example 3 Colours Red was a brilliant tour and we played some of the biggest shows so far but it was all very last minute which made it quite stressful. Whereas AntiProduct was good fun and they were such nice people but travelling is tough and the number of dates we did really takes its toll on your energy levels. Its like cos you get pissed the night before and you've travelled 200 miles to get to the next venue but you've still got to give 100% for the show and for the fans every night. Plus our shows can be quite emotionally demanding so it really takes it out of you on other levels.
IF YOU COULD PLAY WITH ANY OTHER BAND IN THE WORLD EVER, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Dave: Difficult question to give one answer to - there are lots of groundbreaking shows in small clubs by bands I really admire like At The Drive-In or Trail Of The Dead, but you'd also have to think someone like Nirvana when they played in Rio. Pai: That's hard to answer but Guns 'n Roses on the Appetite for Destruction tour would have been cool to play because it was the most energetic tour they did. Sarit: Nirvana - they were my biggest influence and for too many reasons it would have just been great to tour with them.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE GOING ON STAGE?
Dave: Occasionally I get a bit of a nervous tingle, I'm always hyped up before I go onstage but I suppose that's not the same thing. I do know musicians who get really terrified but I'm not one of them (lol). Sarit: No, I personally get really excited - I love it, don't know what it is (probably the adrenalin rush you get when you're onstage) but I live for being onstage! Pai: Maybe a bit before we start playing but nerves go as soon as I start playing.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER A GIG?
Sarit: Catch my breath, rehydrate, then go see the fans. Dave: Some or all of the following - towel off, smoke a joint, drink booze, cough up/vomit, meet the fans. Pai: Wipe off the sweat, open a beer then go out front to meet the kids.
WHICH TRACK DO YOU MOST ENJOY PLAYING LIVE?
Dave: Tinder is cool to play when the crowd sing along, Trinity (off the new EP out next year) is satisfying to play when its played right and Energy is cool cos everybody loves it. (Well, eveyone but Sarit) Sarit: Used to be Rings but we don't play that any more, Tinder is enjoyable to play and Trinity is great especially the crazy bit at the end, but then again I really like playing Lavidia cos of the bassline. I like playing all of them...except Energy. Pai: Energy is cool to play cos the drum parts are fun, its a great song and its a crowd-pleaser.
WHICH TRACK WAS THE HARDEST TO WRITE LYRICS FOR?
Dave: Tinder or Trinity because they're personal. Songs like those are ones where you really reach deep inside yourself so everytime you play them it stirs everything up.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TV SHOWS SUCH AS PLOP STARS AND FAME ACADEMY?
Sarit: Don't like how these people get fame handed to them on a plate when other people who really deserve it can spend their whole lives working towards it and never get there. Dave: I see it for what it is so consequently I have no interest in it. Pai: I think its musical garbage, its all about TV ratings not the music.
ARE THE DARKNESS FOR REAL OR JUST TAKING THE PISS?
Pai: For real, they know exactly what they're doing. Dave: I agree, they're very much for real. Sarit: I just think they're funny - nuff said! WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING ALBUM YOU OWN?
Sarit: A compilation called Hooked on Rock'n Roll with loads of cheesy 50s songs that have been covered by other artists who aren't even famous. Pai: Annhialator - Set The World On Fire, I only bought it cos Mike Mangini plays drums on it. Dave: I've 100s of albums if not 1000s and at least 1/3 of them are crap, but probably a cheesy soft rock album is the most embarrassing, but does it count if its an album that was given to me, as my friends tend to scour the bargain bins looking for dodgy albums to give me.
WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO PICK UP A GUITAR AND JOIN/FORM A BAND?
Dave: A combination of things - the compulsion to write songs and perform them. When you're 15 you know its the coolest thing in the world to do to be in a rock band. Part of the reason you do it is the special connection you have with people. A lot of out music is very personal so you touch people on a personal level.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STARTING UP A BAND?
Dave: Why not. Pai: Know that you're 100% about playing in a band and that its all you want in life cos to do it professionally it demands so much from you, and do whatever it takes to get where you wanna be. Sarit: Do it because you love it.
