COLOUR OF FIRE + ANTIHERO + MIOS DIOS. AT YORK FIBBERS. 27/ 02/ 03.
Mios Dios are a 3 piece from somewhere down south. Unlike with nearly every other band ever, their drummer was not sat at the back of the stage, out of the way, but was instead at the front, inbetween the guitarist and bassist. He was a really good drummer too. The first few tracks were dedicated to the guy who played Robbie in Eastenders! The band were taking the piss out of the fact that he has left Eastenders to join Crossroads! Musically they had quiet, slow bits but also loud, fast bits. Their lyrics were funny. One track was about peas! They were joined onstage by Keith Richards who played the Harmonica for them. The band liked him because he was called Keith Richards and because he plays the Harmonica!! Obviously. During one song, the guitarist and bassist stood still and in silence for about 2 minutes while the drummer got a drink. Was funny. Guess you had to be there though huh? Apart from the recent 4 tracks that were recorded for John Peel, I hadn't heard anything by AntiHero. I knew from those 4 tracks that they were going to be amazing live though and I was right. AntiHero are Pete (the tall one), Davo (the cute one), Jack (the drummer) and Marcus (the other one). Theyre young and energetic. The way Davo kept pacing up and down the stage reminded me of Nicky Wire from the Manics. Their music is quite like the early Manics stuff actually and similar to that of The Dawn parade and Miss black America. Latest single Stravinsky Gave Me Nightmares came about half way through the set. Its about been scared but fascinated at the same time apparently. Its really good but they have tracks that are way better than it, I just dont know what those tracks are called. There were no set lists for me to steal. They dont need them. On the Peel session, they concluded with a cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart. We didnt get that tonight. Antihero dont need to do covers. They have more than enough amazing songs of their own. Cant wait for an album. So on to Yorks very own soon to be superstars Colour Of Fire, returning to their hometown fresh from supporting Idlewild and InMe. We saw them back in November when they were the support for The Kills. A lot has happened since then. Theyve got a record deal, airplay on major stations including Radio One and are about to release their debut single. It is called Decisions. Not a wise choice for a first single in my opinion. They have tracks that are way better than it. After Decisions came the Nu-Metal section. Their words not mine. It included Robot Rock and Caught On Film. Neither track was anything amazing. They made up for that though with Couple Of Reasons, one of the real highlights of the set. They didnt seem very professional. There was an awful lot of messing around inbetween songs. Theyre going to have to get that sorted. I doubt the Placebo fans would take too kindly to a five minute gap between songs. Colour Of Fire arent good enough yet to be supporting such high profile bands. Candles is mellower than the rest of their tracks. It allowed Stuart to take over from Owen on lead vocals. Abit of variety in a set is nice. Then came one of the b-sides from the single. It wasnt written in on the set-list but Im glad they played it as it was one of the best tracks of the night. They concluded with Cut It during which Owen went crazy throwing round his microphone and guitar and pouring a bottle of water over himself. Was a fantastic ending to what had been quite an average set. Antihero were the true stars of the night.
