CELL PROJECTS  '99
EVERY YEAR THE CELL PROJECTS GET MORE ELABORATE.
THIS YEAR'S PROJECTS WERE AMAZING.  ONE THING THAT
EVERYONE NOTICED RIGHT AWAY...EACH PROJECT WAS UNIQUE.
THERE WAS NO COPYING.  IN COMPLEXITY, THE PROJECTS RANGED FROM
A FREEHAND DESIGN NEEDLEPOINTED ONTO A PILLOW,
TO CRAYON ON A PAPER PLATE...WITH A REAL SPECTRUM IN BETWEEN.
MATERIALS INCLUDED CLAY, GLITTER, CANDY, LEGOS, FABRIC, BEADS,
CAKE AND ICING,  CARDBOARD, PAINT, GLUE, STRING, PLASTIC...ETC, ETC.
EACH PROJECT WAS FULLY EXPLAINED IN SCIENTIFIC TERMS.
HERE YOU CAN SEE A LITTLE SAMPLE.

SO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLANT CELL AND AN ANIMAL CELL?  LET'S ASK THE EXPERTS...
lATASHA: In a plant cell, the nucleus is off-center.  There is one large vacuole, and the plant cell can make its own food.
Animal cells have a centered nucleus.  They are round and have many small vacuoles.
EVANGELA: A plant cell is square and an animal cell is round.
OLIVIA: A plant cell has chloroplasts.  These are green structures stored in the chlorophyll.
They make food for the cell.  Since the animal cell does not have chloroplasts, it has to
hunt or look for food.
DAVID: The plant cell has an outer cell wall, and the animal cell does not.
PATRICK:  A vacuole is the storage sack in a cell.  Plant cells have one big vacuole, and animal cells have a whole bunch of little vacuoles.
GAIL:  A plant cell has a cell wall, but an animal cell just has a cell membrane.
JENNIFER: Plants are green because of the chloroplasts.
SALINDRA: The vacuole stores food and also stores waste.  A plant cell has an outer
non-living part called the cell wall.
NOW YOU HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE CELL PROJECTS ABOVE AND DECIDE IF THEY ARE PLANT OR ANIMAL CELLS.
