NFSIII Racing Tips by EA.Com

Racing Tip #1:
When starting the race, don't floor it. Stomping on the gas causes your rear tires to lose traction and gives your opponent an advantage. Instead, hold your RPMs at about 50% of maximum for the car you're driving. This will result in a much better acceleration out of the gate.

Racing Tip #2:
Lay off the gas going into a turn (or apply brakes) and then accelerate through the turn. Your car will come out of the turn at a much higher speed and you'll maintain better control of the car.

Racing Tip #3:
Use a joystick. The joystick is calibrated for finer control of the car than a keyboard or gamepad. You'll find your car is more responsive and performs better.

Racing Tip #4:
Use manual braking as opposed to hand braking. Using the hand brake can cause the rear end to fishtail, or cause the car to spin out altogether.

Racing Tip #5:
If your display is pausing or choppy, turn off visual effects in the Options Menu. A smooth framerate is essential to driving an accurate speed line and eliminating over-correction errors.

Racing Tip #6:
Each car has a power band - a range of RPMs that maximize torque and horsepower. Find your car's power band and try to keep your gear changes in that range.

Racing Tip #7:
Take advantage of wide corners and shoulders by cutting them where you can. If you do this wisely, you can make up time on the AI cars, because they do not cut the corners.

Racing Tip #8:
You don't need shortcuts to win the game. In some cases, you might want to avoid using some shortcuts. You may find yourself experiencing difficulty navigating them and they will slow you down as a result.

Racing Tip #9:
Take the inside lane on the AI cars in turns, with your car between them and the corner. This way if you slide out of a turn, you take your opponent with you by sliding into them. Sometimes sliding into your opponents will get you knocked back on course.

Pursuit Tactic #1:
When playing as the cop, place a spike strip on a narrow stretch of road (in the direction of race travel), turn your siren off, and wait about 20 meters past the strip. When a racer hits the strip, your siren will automatically activate and you will be in the best position for the bust.

Pursuit Tactic #2:
When attempting to pull over a racer, use the front corner of your car to push the rear end of his car sideways. This will cause the racer to spin out and stop.

Pursuit Tactic #3:
The spike strip takes time to properly deploy so it's not possible to just cut someone off and drop it right in front of them. Instead, make sure that you are at least a couple of seconds ahead of your intended victim before setting down the spikes.

Pursuit Tactic #4:
If you are chasing a pack of speeders and your current target is eluding you, consider switching the siren off and then back on. This will drop the current target and re-target the closest speeder, which should be easier to catch.

Pursuit Tactic #5:
As a racer, consider letting your opponent stay just ahead of you when the race begins. This way, the first cop to come by will target them instead of you. Once the cop is fixated on your opponent, you can zoom by without fear (until you get to the next cop that is).

Pursuit Tactic #6:
Once a cop gives you a ticket, you have a brief time during which to get away before they will consider chasing you again. Your radar detector will let you know when your immunity ends. Use this time to get as far away as you can.
