Shreveport's former Mayor James C. Gardner, born June 17, 1924, in Shreveport, Louisiana at the Schumpert Sanitarium to Arvill Pitt and Marie Creswell Gardner.

Mayor Gardner's grandfather was James Pleasants Creswell, owner of the Creswell Hotel in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the great grandson of Julia Pleasants Creswell, renown author of four books, three of which have been republished.

His fifth removed grandfather was Thomas Bibb, the second governor of Alabama. On his mother's side he descended from Pierce Mason Butler, governor of South Carolina from 1836-38.
