There are many secondary characters in A Swift and Subtle Light. Some of them are listed and described below.
Hope Fidele's Family - Hope lives with her mother and father. Both of her parents are rather overprotective.
Sarah - Hope's original best friend. The two girls are very close to each other at the start of their sophomore year of high school, but as Hope grows closer to Lucius and the other members of the Six, she and Sarah slowly drift apart. It pains both of them to feel so distant, and for a while, Sarah pretends that their friendship is about the same. Still, they end up going their separate ways.
Mr. McCain - The unfailingly grumpy and tired old orchestra teacher at Marysville High School. He has an incredibly difficult time keeping his rather rowdy students in line.
Conroy Perse - Lucius Alman's great-great-great grandfather. He created an enchanted map that the current Six use in their battle in the World of Vice. He plays a larger role in the story, in time.
Crystal Fay - One of only three people known to the Six to have a Transport Medallion that allows her to travel to the World of Vice. Crystal, or Mrs. Fay, as her English students at Marysville High call her, never gives up hope that her husband will return to her. As one of the Six, Arthur Fay disappeared one day, never returning from the World of Vice. His wife still waits for him hopefully, and constantly believes that Earth will be saved and the World of Vice purified.
Dolores Cogna - One of three known people to possess a Transport Medallion; it allows her to travel to the World of Vice. "Ms. Cogna" is a math teacher at Marysville High. Her husband, Tristan Perdon, is lost in the World of Vice, as Arthur Fay is. Instead, however, of being hopeful, Dolores chooses to pretend that the World of Vice does not exist except in her mind and that her husband has killed himself. In reality, she loves and aches for her husband so much that pretending everything is a falsehood is her only way to numb the pain. She has grown to despise everything that seems impossible or anything that strays from straightforward facts.
