Soon, Hope meets Melanthe, a strange, cynical girl who reveals Hope's destiny with her second gift. Along with five others in a group called the Six, Hope must use the relic-like Orb of Earth to battle with a secret evil that has been threatening Earth for millennia. Soon, Hope learns of true pain and terror, and also of new philosophies which she learns from the other members of the Six. Hope is soon thrown into a life of confusion and torment. While trying desperately to maintain her previous reckless optimism, she often finds herself in the deepest of despairs. She begins to notice her own belief: that everything revolves in endless circles, a suffocating realization that wrenchs her heart ceaselessly. During her time at high school, Hope meets and falls in love with a boy, Lucius. He is her saving beacon, and, Hope feels, the only thing that can help her maintain her sanity. Soon, though, something strange goes drastically wrong, leaving Hope stranded as Lucius begins to grow cold and distant. Soon, he begins to loathe her. Thrown into agony, Hope even further questions the correctness of light and love. Caught in an endless downward spiral, Hope must discover her path...but how?
