As a result, she is stoic and indifferent. Nonetheless, she has two capabilities: her wealth of philosophy and her destiny to fight evil. Melanthe, following in the tradition of so many others with the same destiny before her, is a member of the current Six. These orb-bearers are fated to destroy a threatening force in the darkest of worlds that will otherwise overtake Earth. Melanthe is the bearer of the Orb of Darkness. However, Melanthe believes that their fighting is part of a futile and painful struggle that will end in failure. It isn't long before Melanthe informs the main character of the novel, Hope, of her future as the holder of the Orb of Earth. Soon, the two end up spending a great deal of time together as they fight. Melanthe's dark beliefs greatly influence Hope's, pulling at her attention and never completely leaving her. Melanthe's brief bursts of happiness occur only when she is with her love, Aidan, the bearer of the Orb of Fire. The fact that even people like Melanthe can experience such joy is a beautiful realization that keeps Hope pushing on through her times of trouble. Without Melanthe's help, Hope could never realize her own philosophy or experience her full potential.
