Lilith-First Wife of Adam

In Jewish tradition, Lilith is known as a female demon, the bride of Sammael.  She was also known as the enemy of infants, and the first wife of Adam.  She had marital relations with Adam before the creation of Eve.  When Eve was created, Lilith fled to the sea coast where she still dwells, trying to ensnare mankind.

In the Zohar (Leviticus 19a) she is described as a hot fiery female, who at first cohabitated with man.  In the Cabala, she is the demon of Friday and is represented as a naked woman with a serpent’s tail.

The story of Lilith and the creation of Eve is a strange one.  When Adam and Lilith consented to marital relations, Adam insisted that Lilith lie beneath him, she refused, and when he tried to force her beneath him, she uttered the secret name of God and flew away.  Adam was heartbroken and lonely, and pleaded with God to bring Lilith back to him, so God sent three angels to find Lilith and bring her back to Adam. They found Lilith, and she refused to return with them, so God created Eve to take her place as Adams helpmeet.

It is said in some sources that Lilith can produce demon children by mating with sleeping men, unbeknownst to them.  In this way she gave birth to daughters who roam the earth doing the same thing.  Dreams of sex could produce demon children, because it was Lilith or one of her demon daughters who caused the man to sin.

The myth of Lilith first shows up in Mesopotamian demonology. Some say that Lilith is a derivative of Lili; the demonic female spirits of Mesopotamia, also known as Ardat Lili.
