Suffering from Profiler withdrawal with no hope of a cure because Ally Walker's left the show and Jamie Luner just isn't working for you? Craving something to read that you don't have to print and bind yourself (in other words, not fanfic)? Here are some works of literature in the spirit of the series, works that you can use to impress friends, colleagues, family and professors at the same time! Oh, and since I'm a SABER, this list will reflect that, but since none of these stories involve characters from the show, Believers should be able to enjoy it too. They'll just have to find different reasons than I did for certain works being on this list! ;-)
Allusions (literary works the series has alluded to)Cases (good suspenseful mysteries)
- The Bible--*sigh* Sadly, the person who most often quotes this is Jack. But that doesn't mean it isn't good! Look what he did to red roses, after all!
- The Complete Works of William Shakespeare--The killer in "Insight" liked to quote Shakespeare. Gee, serial killers sure are well-read, aren't they?
- The Poetry of John Donne--Bailey likes to quote this in bed...can we say closet romantic?
- "Tinker Jack and the Tidy Wives" by Sylvia Plath--Not referred to in the series, but REALLY creepy if you read it thinking of Profiler's Jack!
- Manhunter by John Douglas--Written by the man who invented profiling as the FBI knows it today. The character of Bailey was partly based on this man.
By A.J. Holt
Soulmates (literary predecessors and/or kindred spirits of Sam and Bailey)By Thomas Harris
- Watch Me--Very welll written but sometimes overly-graphic novel about a renegade female FBI agent who doesn't just profile serial killers. (Picture Sam if Jack had his way--recommended especially for Skewed Believers. *shudder*)
- Catch Me--A sequel to Watch Me. I haven't read it yet, so I can't really say anything about it.
- The Silence of the Lambs--Do I really need to explain this one? Fans were alluding to it heavily and sarcastically after the capture of Donald Lucas...
- Red Dragon--A prequel (of sorts) to The Silence of the Lambs.
- Hannibal--Recently released sequel to The Silence of the Lambs.
Kay Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell--The main character is a sharp-witted Virginia chief medical examiner with similarities to both Sam and Grace. And, over the course of the novels, I hear a rather Sam/Bailey-like relationship develops between her and an FBI agent...
- Postmortem
- Body of Evidence
- All that Remains
Tommy and Tuppence Beresford created by Agatha ChristieLord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane created by Dorothy Sayers
- The Secret Adversary
- Partners in Crime--Tommy and Tuppence pose as private investigators to catch a spy and solve cases in the style of their favorite detectives along the way.
- N or M?
- By the Pricking of My Thumbs
- Postern of Fate
Others
- Strong Poison--Lord Peter must prove Harriet's innocence when she is arrested for supposedly poisoning her ex-lover; this is their first meeting.
- Have His Carcase
- Gaudy Night
- Busman's Honeymoon--What are the chances that a famous literary detective and his new bride could have an uneventful honeymoon? About as likely as a relaxing weekend at Bailey's friend's cabin...
The following recommendations aren't just for the young, since I've enjoyed them as well, they're just novels, etc. written with children and young adults in mind. These won't do as much to impress people, but they're still worth reading. ;-)
Juvenile FictionThe Nancy Drew Mysteries by Carolyn Keene--Classic young adult mysteries with a female detective and a supporting character named George! :-) You'll forgive me if I don't list all the innumerable titles here.Young Adult FictionThe Hardy Boys Mysteries by Frank W. Dixon--Just picture John and Nathan poring over these as kids. :-) Again, not gonna list all the titles here.

By L.M. Montgomery--This turn-of-the-century author had a fondness for heroines who couldn't decide between the men in their lives. But in the end, they always ended up with the right one--Hey, Mr. Kronish, you listening?By Christopher Pike
