The Truman Show
USA, 1998
[Peter Weir]
Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone
Comedy / Drama

Truman Burbank has it all, a well-paid secure job that he loves, a beautiful wife that will never leave him, the worlds best, best friend and the most idyllic place in the world to live, he is a happy man. Or is he? Because gradually, bit by bit, his world is starting to look a little strange with more questions than answers as things start to happen, he realises that he is trapped in his own paradise. Then he realises what has been going on since the day he was born.

Ill leave it there if you havent seen the movie, because for the first half hour youll wonder whats going on before you uncover the truth. Thats why this film works so well, because it dares to be original, both in its approach as well as storyline. Jim Carrey is a marvel, this is truly a landmark performance for him, proving that hes more than just a rubber face and silly voices; the supporting cast is great too. But its the direction of the film, which catches your eye; the photography, lighting, angles and superb soundtrack all gel together seamlessly.

Unfortunately, not all people like this sort of movie and there is no way around it, this really is a love it or hate it movie, but its worth watching, to find out which way you go.
